*Photography Exhibit: Candlewood Camera Club is celebrating its 60th anniversary year with a special exhibit at the library for the month of July. More than 50 works by members of the club, including a few Newtown residents, are on view in the Olga Knoepke Memorial Meeting Room.

 

 Children’s Programs

*Summer Craft Programs: Ages 6 and up are invited to join Marie Walker for one of any of the craft workshops she will be offering on Mondays from 3 to 4 pm.

Upcoming programs are as planned: July 23, make a windsock; July 30, paint a car; August 6, make a birdhouse; and August 13, make an easy-tie pillow.

Signup is required for each workshop, and can be done in the children’s department.

There is no fee for this program.

*Meet Ms Frizzle!

Join us on Tuesday, July 24, at 2 pm, when the colorful character from the wonderful Magic School Series of books written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen makes a special guest appearance in the children’s department.

*Passport to Adventure: Children entering grades 2 and 3 are invited to explore the folklore, music, culture, crafts, and foods from around the world with Elise Silkowski during programs that focus on a different country each week. The next stop on this trip around the world is India on July 25, from 1 to 2:30 pm.

Space is limited; sign up in the children’s department. Please let us know if your child has any food allergies. There is no fee for this program.

*PJ Story Time: Children ages 3-7 and their parents are invited for a program of stories, songs and a puppet show based on The Wizard’s Sneeze on Wednesday, July 25, at 6:30 pm. Pajamas are encouraged.

No registration is required for this 45-minute program, which will also be offered on August 1 and 8. Different stories are featured each week.

*Nutmeg Book Discussions: Students entering grades 4–6 in the fall are invited to join our informal Nutmeg Book discussions this summer.

The next book to be discussed, on July 26, will be Hatching Magic by Ann Downer. Programs are in the story hour room, and run from 4 to 5 in the story hour room.

No registration is required. Join us, and bring a friend if you want. 

 

Programs For Young Adults

*Hands-On Digital Photography: John Tucci of Flagpole Photographers Club will be leading a special workshop for young adults interested in learning about digital photography.

Limited to ten young adults entering grade 6 and up, the workshop will be on Saturday, July 28, from 9 to 10:30 am. Participants will meet outside the library back door, walk around the library (outdoors and inside), and take photos and get pointers and assistance from Mr Tucci.

Participants may invite a parent or other adult to come with them. You’ll need to bring your own digital camera and manual. Registration is requested and can be done in person or over the phone.

 

Adult Programs

 *Summer Concerts: This year the library’s summer concerts are at a new location, the bandstand at Sandy Hook Center (corner of Glen Road and Church Hill Road). Performances begin at 7 pm, and attendees should bring their own chairs or blankets for seating.

The third and final concert this year will be Easton Banjo Society on Saturday, August 4. Shows start at 7, and move to the library’s lower meeting room in the event of rain.

Picnic dinners are welcome (bring along your own trash bag), and you’ll need to provide your own seating.

*Indie Film Update: The next offering in the Independent Film Series will be Who’s Camus Anyway? The film will be screened on Tuesday, August 7, at 7:30 pm.

The story is set on the campus of a university in Tokyo. Students from the literature department’s film workshop are about to start shooting a movie called The Bored Murderer. Everyone is in a rush to prepare for the shoot, but the lead actor drops out suddenly, and the team is forced to search for a replacement at the last minute.
