An Inexpensive Alternative

To Speed Bumps

To the Editor:

I was disappointed to see that the Police Commission approved speed bumps for Queen Street. When I first heard of this proposal I did some research and came up with an alternative plan that would cost about $300. It consists of placing stop signs on Queen Street at the three streets that intersect with Queen Street.

When I proposed this to the first selectman he didn’t think it was a good idea. Then I ran into the police chief one day and his response was it might work but the police would have to enforce it. Which I thought was their responsibility.

Well in the same edition of The Bee I see that the police were able to recruit the two additional officers the requested in the budget for traffic enforcement.

My concern is how many more roads will be asking for speed bumps if this goes forward. Why not try the stop signs for awhile to see if it doesn’t slow down the speeders on Queen Street. I am sure the town can come up with the $300.
