Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by the Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*TRAVEL TO THE ISLANDS at Camp Conri Lodge in Ashford, Monday to Friday, July 24–28 if you have already signed up.

*TAI CHI  & CHI KUNG will be offered on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 pm. Steve Kurimai will instruct the gentle arts of movement that promote mind-body connection, and improve balance, coordination, and relaxation.

*BALLROOM DANCING class will continue on Thursdays from 4 to 5 pm. Cost is $7 per class or $28 for a four-week session. No partner is needed to take this class.

  *STEPS & STONES — Create a stepping stone on Tuesday, July 25, from 1 to 3 pm. The cost is $5 (all supplies included).

*The THREE-DAY TRIP, RUTH, August 9–11, to Lancaster, Penn., is CANCELLED.

*REMINDERS: *SWEET HART BUS — Call 748-2511 for reservations and 830-4399, their direct line, to go home so you don’t have to wait at doctor’s office. Also, Saturday service between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm for weekend appointments or shopping.

*Call the Senior Center or stop for information or reservations for the various trips that are being offered. Come to the center for overnight trip booklets.

OVERNIGHT TRIPS

*MAINE RAIL & SAIL — From September 26 to 28 enjoy a boat cruise on Penobscot Bay, lunch at Schoolhouse Restaurant in Portland; dinner at Rockland Trade Winds, Lobster Capital of Maine; tour Maine Lighthouse Museum, Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth building, and after a buffet breakfast, board the Maine Eastern Railroad’s “Lobster Land Train” for a scenic train ride through Wiscasset, Bath, and Brunswick. The cost is $349 for double, $459, single, and $339, triple (includes 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners, including 1 lobster choice dinner).

*Enjoy the excitement of LAS VEGAS, the thrill of casino gambling, and entertainment around the clock from Sunday, October 8, to Friday, October 13. Tour includes roundtrip airfare, accommodations for five nights at THE FLAMINGO HILTON, three free show admissions, two day trips, and other city discounts. Cost for 65 and older: $689 pp double and $869 single; and for under 64: $749 pp double and $934 single.

DAY TRIPS

*JIMMY STURR & HIS ORCHESTRA. Depart Thursday, August 3, at 7:45 from the Senior Center for Swansea, Mass. Have lunch at Venus DeMilo and listen to this award-winning show. The cost is $80.

*CRUISIN’ CALMLY ALONG. On August 23, depart at 8 am from the Senior Center to Holyoke, Mass., visit the Wistariahurst Museum, and have lunch at Delaney House. After lunch, cruise the Connecticut River on the Lady Bea, sailing between Holyoke and Northampton.

Sandwich wraps are available on Friday. Call three days in advance to order. The cost is $2.

Monday: July 24: Maryland crab cake with tartar sauce, creamy macaroni & cheese, green peas, whole wheat bread, pineapple juice, apricot halves;

Tuesday: July 25: Succulent pork chop with applesauce garnish, stuffed and gravy, California blend vegetables, oatmeal bread, cranberry juice, fresh grapes;

Wednesday: German chicken salad with chicken, peas, pineapple on a bed of lettuce with tomato wedge, ranch dressing, seedless rye bread, chocolate chip cookie;

Thursday: Yankee pot roast with gravy, mashed potato, French green beans, wheat dinner roll, birthday cake.

Friday: No hot lunch

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday, July 31: Sweet & sour boneless chicken served over brown rice, Oriental blend vegetables, whole wheat bread, pineapple tidbits.

Thursday: AM, pinochle, hatha yoga, bowling, cards; PM ballroom dancing

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM knitting, cards.
