Democrats Announce Proposed Slate For Caucus

By John Voket

The Newtown Democratic Town Committee released its list of proposed candidates preceding its July 25 caucus, which is slated for 8 pm in the Edmond Town Hall lower meeting room. The roster was presented following the final meeting of the DTC nominating committee and was accepted by the full committee on July 14.

As previously announced in The Bee, incumbent First Selectman Herb Rosenthal has agreed to run for another term and has been renominated for the post. To date, Mr Rosenthal is unopposed, and according to last week’s report from the Republican Town Committee, there is no plan to recommend a GOP opponent for the November race.

Democratic selectman Joseph Bojnowski is also being recommended for renomination at the caucus.

Among the three local legislative council districts, the only newcomer is First District candidate Keith E. Jacobs. Francis Pennarola is also a First District contender.

In the Second District, Peggy Baiad, Joseph Hemingway, and council vice-chair Timothy Holian have all pledged to run again. The Third District will see Daniel Amaral and James Schpunt, Sr, returning to the Democratic ticket.

Lisa Schwartz and Thomas Gisson are the proposed Democratic candidates for the Board of Education, while James Gaston, Sr, Peter Giarratano, and Michael Portnoy are up for the Board of Finance.

Jay T. Gill has been recommended to return to the Town Hall Board of Managers.

Lilla Dean has been proposed for the Planning and Zoning Commission with Richard Eigen called for an alternate position on the P&Z. Robert Connor has been recommended for the Police Commission, as was Alan Clavette for the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Anne Marie Cohen was put up as a ZBA alternate.

At press time, the Democrats had yet to propose a third candidate for vacant seats in the First and Third Legislative Council Districts, and also had an opening for a P&Z alternate.

Democratic Town Committee Chairman Earl Smith said that any positions remaining open following last Thursday evening’s nominating meeting could still be filled before or at the caucus.

“The town committee can authorize the nominating subcommittee to continue working to secure candidates to complete the slate,” Mr Smith said. He said if the situation comes down to presenting a full slate as late as the night of the local Democratic caucus, the endorsements will in effect, be “preapproved” by party leadership.

He said that, by law, any Democrat would be welcome at the party caucus to put forth an alternative nominee.

“If there is somebody out there who wants to put forth a candidate, the caucus is the time,” Mr Smith said.
