Protecting Natural Resources

To the Editor:

I would like to thank the Conservation Commission on their vote to reject the condo complex proposed for the Oakview Road site. Threats to the Deep Brook and Pootatuck River watershed must be taken very seriously. It is a precious natural resource — one of eight Wild Trout Management Areas in our state — and too many times have the good intentions of man gone awry.

I’m sure that neither the State of Connecticut nor the Town of Newtown intended to spill oil into Deep Brook. But spill oil they did. Despite assurances by Toll Brothers for careful planning and excavation, their actions would have established too great a risk to the Pootatuck River and the Wild Trout Management Area. Our community must continue to be vigilant for development that puts at risk the things that make this town special.
