'Suitable' Places For Kids
âSuitableâ Places For Kids
To the Editor:
While sitting and discussing Newtown after coming home from a delightful night at âMochaâ weâve noticed that for the young adult population here in Sandy Hook and Newtown there are not many locations around in which they can spend time with friends.
As we know there is the teen center, which we have spent time at, but this seems to be the only place available. As much fun as the teen center is, it is only provided at night and only offers soda, candy, and live rock music in a dark location where sketchy activities take place from lack of entertainment.
We know there is Dunkinâ Donuts, Big Y, and delis, but these places all seem to be categorized as âfood places.â Isnât there a pressing issue on obesity? Also, Grand Union has been vacant for at least a year, probably more. This could be turned into a place for teens to have fun and enjoy themselves without losing interest, which turns to boredom, which leads to drugs. Similar to Sandy Hook Village, the shopping center where Big Y is located and all surrounding businesses, including by Newtown Middle School, could be turned into a more interactive area for teens.
Overall, we believe that the drugs in Newtown have increased due to the lack of âsuitableâ places where kids can hang out. Weâre not saying that Newtown isnât doing a good job of increasing the interactive part of our town, but we do insist on making more of the interactive-ness based towards teens.
Sincerely,
Betsy Vendel
