Town Needs To Take The Lead In Conservation
Town Needs To Take The Lead In Conservation
To the Editor:
The Beeâs article on Newtownâs Planning and Zoning Commission approval of a five-lot residential subdivision for a 21-acre site near the intersection of Boggs Hill Road and Head of Meadow Road describes how the commission is powerless to affect changes to the area that adversely affect the neighborhoodâs rural character.
As I unfortunately discovered with another subdivision on Bentagrass Lane just off Boggs Hill Road last year, the Conservation Commission similarly is powerless to âconserveâ our rural character other than enforcing wetlands regulations. What I do not understand is the following: Our town government had the power to permanently alter the character of our neighborhood by ordering developers to pave the short dirt road that Bentagrass Lane has always been, which involved cutting down numerous trees and tearing out bushes that we had been maintaining for years. Indeed, my family has enjoyed the scenic character of this road for four generations. If our town government does have that authority to alter our landscape, why then cannot it use this to prevent the builders of the Head of Meadows subdivision from altering the trees and bushes that grow along Boggs Hill Road on town property. It seems to me that other than allowing reasonable space for driveways, the preservation of existing growth along the town road in addition to easement areas where site alterations are prohibited would go a long way to preserving the rural character of our neighborhood. The town has the capacity to make this happen...is anybody listening?
I certainly hope so, because otherwise Newtownâs future looks bleak indeed. If preservation is not valued by our town government, then ourselves and other families holding large parcels of land in Newtown will have no incentive whatsoever to preserve it, but instead will be influenced by our new neighbors to subdivide and develop. I certainly hope that never happens.
Sincerely,
Martin Walker
