Along Main Street—

Lions To Fly The Red,

White And Blue

Appreciating the splendor of the American flags that line Route 25 in Brookfield this summer, as they have for several previous years, Newtown Lions Club member Paul Arneth wondered if it would be possible for Newtown to join the ranks of area towns that put on a summer show of flags.

That possibility has become a reality, with the Newtown Lions Club gaining permission from the Borough of Newtown on Thursday, July 16, to purchase and mount flags on poles along the length of Main Street, from Currituck Road to the intersection of 302, said Lions president Tom Evagash.

Lions Club members Tom Evagash, Vince LaSorsa, Denny McLaughlin, and Paul Arneth will assist Al Potter on Sunday, August 9, or Sunday, August 16, in placing the 30 6-foot-tall aluminum poles and 3-foot-by-5-foot flags along the street. The date, said Mr Evagash, will depend on the availability of Mr Potter and his cherry picker.

“We plan to leave the flags in place until after 9/11 this year,” said Mr Evagash. Each year following, the Lions hope to fly the flags from Memorial Day until September 11, and will replace them with new flags each summer.

The Newtown Lions Club also purchases a new summer flag for the flagpole in the center of Main Street each year.
