Elections Have Consequences XI

To The Editor:

Republican Senator Joni Ernst, of Iowa, recently reminded us that we are all going to die someday. To that end, Trump, along with his Cabinet full of conspiracy theorists and corporate toadies and the Eunuch Caucus in congress (formerly known as the GOP) are doing everything in their power to make sure that we reach that end sooner rather than later.

The Trump/Republican budget bill that recently passed will remove 10 million people from Medicaid and an additional 5 million will lose their insurance under the ACA. For everyone else insurance rates will likely go up. Rural hospitals will close and the reduction in SNAP benefits will ensure more kids going to bed hungry.

Medical research, including cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, has been cut back both by federal agencies and grants to universities. Cutbacks to health care operations like Planned Parenthood will mean fewer facilities that can provide local support.

It is already difficult for some women in red states to find an OB/GYN within a reasonable distance. A suicide hot line for LGBTQ youth that was receiving 70,000 calls/month has been disconnected. Major cuts have also been made to Veterans benefits and attacks on vaccines will continue. There will be fewer food inspectors.

Environmental regulations will be eliminated, rolled back or just not enforced, leading to an increase in air and water pollution. Restrictions on chemical companies are being loosened when they should be more tightly enforced.

The term Climate Change is being eliminated from the government’s vocabulary. Ignoring it will not make it go away. One goal of Project 2025 is to downsize, or breakup NOAA because it is a primary component “of the climate change alarm industry.” Storms are going to continue getting more intense and more people will die, and FEMA may or may not be around to help.

Republicans have long claimed to be the pro-life party, and they are — from conception to birth. After birth, however, they become the YOYO party — You’re On Your Own.
