Checkpoint Finds No Drunk Drivers, But Issues 33 Miscellaneous Violations
Although police found no drunken/drugged drivers at a sobriety checkpoint held on Church Hill Road last weekend, they did detect 33 motor vehicle violations that they noted to offending motorists.
Police set up the sobriety checkpoint on Church Hill Road, near Hawley School. The event was held on the night of Saturday, July 21, and early morning hours of Sunday, July 22.
Police most often hold such checkpoints on the section of Hawleyville Road (Route 25) near its intersection with Covered Bridge Road, or on Wasserman Way near its intersection with Trades Lane.
Eight police participated in the Church Hill Road checkpoint, stopping each motorist traveling in either direction on the street, to ask whether the drivers had consumed alcohol and/or drugs before driving.
During the checkpoint, police issued two infraction tickets for driving an unregistered vehicle, handed out 26 warnings for miscellaneous motor vehicle violations, and issued five warnings for failure to wear seatbelts.
Three-quarters of the police overtime costs for such checkpoints is covered by grant funds. Police plan to hold another sobriety checkpoint in late August.
