Free Cancer Workshops Hosted By Hospital
DANBURY â Biweekly breast cancer education classes take place at The Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital Wednesdays, August 8 and August 22, from 4 to 5:30 pm. Classes take place on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, and are open to any woman newly diagnosed with breast cancer who plans to have or recently had breast cancer surgery.
Breast cancer education classes are held in the Ruth C. Donovan Resource Room Library, located on the first floor, Stroock Building, Locust Avenue entrance. Family and friends also are invited to attend.
The purpose of the classes is to provide information about what to expect before and after surgery, including pre- and postoperative care, lymphedema precautions and exercise, relaxation techniques, as well as information about local support services.
Instructors include oncology health care professionals, a complementary medicine coordinator, a surgical staff nurse, an occupational therapist, and volunteers from Bridges, a program established by the Community Cancer Collaborative (The American Cancer Society, Annâs Place, The Home of I Can, and The Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital) that connects newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to breast cancer survivors. The Community Cancer Collaborative works together to provide support services to cancer patients.
In related news, The Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital will host a âLook Goodâ¦Feel Betterâ workshop sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS) on Monday, August 20, from 10 am to noon.
The free workshop also takes place at the Praxair Cancer Centerâs conference room, located on the first floor of the Stroock Building, Locust Avenue entrance, and valet parking also is available.
âLook Goodâ¦Feel Betterâ workshops focus on teaching female cancer patients beauty techniques that will help restore their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Trained volunteer beauty experts from the community lead small groups through practical, hands-on experience regarding makeup techniques, skin care, nail care, and options related to hair loss such as wigs, turbans, and scarves. Workshop participants will each receive a free kit of cosmetics for use during and after the workshop.
âLook Good ⦠Feel Betterâ workshops are conducted at Danbury Hospital on the second Monday of each month. To register, contact Danbury Hospitalâs cancer care coordinator Joanne Ballerini, RN, at 739-7771.            Â
