Local Pianists Win Selected Students Awards

Five Newtown students recently won various piano awards. They are students of Felicia Feng Zhang, a national award-winning teacher who directs a professional piano studio in Southbury.

Abben Hung, age 14, won the trophy for the 2007 Selected Students Piano competition sponsored by the New Haven Chapter of the Connecticut State Music Teachers’ Association. He passed the Musicianship Achievement Program for Level 8. He won the Advanced Bach Medal from National Piano Guild USA in 2006. Abben is the son of Peiqing Li

Brendan Gregory, a fourth grader at Sandy Hook School, received the Sonatina Medal from the National Piano Guild USA. He was presented with a plaque, a certificate with a gold embossed pin, a report card, and a year’s membership in the guild. His picture will appear in the fall issue of Piano Guild Notes National Magazine. He has been studying piano less than two years. Brendan is the son of Dan and Cathy Gregory.

Hannah Grant, who will enter fifth grade at Reed School this fall, has studied piano for four and half years. She has won numerous awards, including Hartford-area Select Students and Western Select Students for Intermediate Level. She passed the Musicianship Achievement Program with high honors for Level 4. Hannah also won the Early Bach and Sonatina Medal from National Piano Guild USA the past two years. She is daughter of Mae and Marshall Grant.

Don Sun, sixth grader at Reed School, has studied piano for less than four years. He was a winner in the past three years. This year, he is a winner in Advanced Level in Selected Piano Students Competition of the Western Connecticut Music Teacher Association (WCMTA). He also passed the Musicianship Achievement Program with high honors for Level 6. Don, the son of Zhihong Yang and Haihang Sun, won the Early Bach and Sonatina Medal from National Piano Guild USA in 2005 and 2006.

Henry Mitchell, a sixth grader at The Fraser-Woods School, has played piano for two years. He is the winner in the Intermediate Level of Selected Piano Students Competition of WCMTA. He is the son of Christine and Scott Mitchell of Southbury.
