*Photography Exhibit: Candlewood Camera Club is celebrating its 60th anniversary year with a special exhibit at the library for the month of July. More than 50 works by members of the club, including a few Newtown residents, are on view in the Olga Knoepke Memorial Meeting Room.

*Art Quilts on Display: Upstairs, on the library’s main floor, members of The Scrapbag Quilt Artists are presenting the group’s annual show of art quilts. On view until August 31 are ten art quilts that fill the theme of “Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales: A Display of Art by the Scrapbag Quilt Artists.” (See profile of this show in this week’s Enjoy section.)

Children’s

Programs

*Summer Reading for children ages 4 through grade five is ongoing through August 18.  Children choose which books they wish to read, record them on their reading record, discuss the books with young adult volunteers, and earn incentives for every five books read.

A raffle will be held on August 20, after the reading program ends, for grand prizes donated by area businesses.

*Summer Craft Programs: Ages 6 and up are invited to join Marie Walker for one of any of the craft workshops she is offering on Mondays from 3 to 4 pm.

Upcoming programs are as planned: July 30, paint a car; August 6, make a birdhouse; and August 13, make an easy-tie pillow.

Signup is required for each workshop, and can be done in the children’s department. There is no fee for this program.

*Passport to Adventure: Children entering grades 2 and 3 are invited to explore the folklore, music, culture, crafts, and foods from around the world with Elise Silkowski during programs that focus on a different country each week. The next stop on this trip around the world is Australia on August 1, from 1 to 2:30 pm.

Space is limited; sign up in the children’s department. Please let us know if your child has any food allergies. There is no fee for this program.

*PJ Story Time: Join us for a program of stories, songs, and a puppet show Wednesday evenings 6:30-7:15 in the large meeting room.  On Wednesday, August 1, the puppet show will be Shaggy the Shamefully Dirty Dog.

PJ Time is for children ages 3-7 and their parents. No registration is required. Pajamas are encouraged. One more PS Story Time will be offered on August 8, featuring a different puppet show; call the library for details or come in and be surprised.

*Nutmeg Book Discussions: Students entering grades 4–6 in the fall are invited to join our informal Nutmeg Book discussions this summer.

The next book to be discussed, on Thursday, August 2, will be Shredderman: Secret Identity by Wendelin Van Draanen. Programs are in the story hour room, and run from 4 to 5 in the story hour room.

No registration is required. Join us, and bring a friend if you want. 

*Dogs Who Help People: Children age 5 and up will have the opportunity to meet a therapy dog and learn about how these special animals help people on Friday, August 3, from 2 to3 pm, in the library meeting room.

A representative from Guiding Eyes for the Blind will talk about the special training these dogs must pass before they are ready to help someone with a disability.

There is no fee for this program, but participants are encouraged to bring a gift for the dogs in training. The list of acceptable gifts is available in the children’s department.

*Meet the Rock Cats Mascot: Hear baseball stories and meet Rocky, the New Britain Rock Cats mascot, on Thursday, August 9, at 1 pm, in the meeting room.  No registration required.

*C.H. Booth Library is 75!

On Thursday, August 16, the library will host a birthday party at the Town Hall gym from 1 to 3 pm. Airborne Jugglers will perform and birthday cake will be served.

Space is limited to the first 200 children. Parents must remain with their children for the duration of the program.

 

Programs For

Young Adults

***Date Change for Digital Photography program: John Tucci of Flagpole Photographers Club will be leading a special Hands-On Digital Photography Workshop for young adults interested in learning about digital photography. The new date and time for this workshop is Saturday, August 11, from 10 to 11:30 am.

Limited to ten young adults entering grade 6 and up, the workshop will begin outside the library back door, walk around the library (outdoors and inside), and take photos and get pointers and assistance from Mr Tucci.

Participants may invite a parent or other adult to come with them. You’ll need to bring your own digital camera and manual. Registration is requested and can be done in person or over the phone.

*Mosaics Crafts with Katie Stevenson is being offered on Wednesday, August 8, from 1 to 2:30 pm. Space is limited to 15 young people entering fifth grade and up, and preference will be given to Newtown residents.

A supply fee of $4 is due at signup. Each participant should bring three or four natural items that you have personally found to work into your design. Each item (such as shells, stone, glass pieces, etc) should be no more than 1½ inches square.

*‘Tweens & Teens Summer Reading for students entering sixth and up continues through August 6.

Fill out a form in the YA area for each book you read, and be entered into our weekly drawing for gift certificates from local merchants. Great prizes!

Drawings are held on Monday afternoons at 4, and winners are contacted by phone.

Adult

Programs

 *Summer Concerts: This year the library’s summer concerts are at a new location, the bandstand at Sandy Hook Center (corner of Glen Road and Church Hill Road). Performances begin at 7 pm, and attendees should bring their own chairs or blankets for seating.

The third and final concert this year will be Easton Banjo Society on Saturday, August 4. Shows start at 7, and move to the library’s lower meeting room in the event of rain.

Picnic dinners are welcome (bring along your own trash bag), and you’ll need to provide your own seating.

*Indie Film Update: The next offering in the Independent Film Series will be Who’s Camus Anyway? The film will be screened on Tuesday, August 7, at 7:30 pm.

The story is set on the campus of a university in Tokyo. Students from the literature department’s film workshop are about to start shooting a movie called The Bored Murderer. Everyone is in a rush to prepare for the shoot, but the lead actor drops out suddenly, and the team is forced to search for a replacement at the last minute.

*The Book Nook: Lots of great books for summer reading are available at the Nook. Try a mystery or maybe a fantasy book for something new!
