Off-Duty Norwalk Cop Arrested On Three Charges

Following an investigation into a June incident at a Sandy Hook Center bar/restaurant, Newtown police have arrested an off-duty Norwalk police officer on three charges.

Newtown police said they arrested Liam Callahan, 37, of Sandy Hook on a warrant on the evening of July 24, charging him with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree threatening, and second-degree breach of peace.

After posting $10,000 bail, Callahan was released from custody for an August 7 arraignment on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.

Callahan has been disciplined by Norwalk police for the June 9 incident and for previous incidents.

Newtown police declined to provide details about the June 9 incident.

But in a past report, police acknowledged they had received a complaint about a threat made by a man with a gun.

Police said, “On Saturday, June 9, 2007, at approximately 2:42 am, the Newtown Police Department received a phone call from an individual. The person reported that at approximately 1:30 am, a person, who he did not know, pointed a gun at him. The incident reportedly took place in the bathroom at 100 Church Hill Road Restaurant, 100 Church Hill Road…The caller had left the establishment prior to calling the police department.”

The police investigation into that complaint resulted in Callahan’s arrest.
