Ann Titsworth Carey

Ann Titsworth Carey, 92, of Newtown, died July 17 at Masonicare of Newtown. She was born in Milwaukee, Wis., May 9, 1920, to Edith Dayton Titsworth and Godfrey Van Duzer Titsworth.

Three daughters, Sally Ann “Sas” Carey of Middlebury, Vt., Julia Carey Petro of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and Joan Carey, and her husband Andrew Baron, Jr, of La Plume, Penn.; two sons, Jason Carey, and his wife Carolyn, of Cornwall, Vt., and Thomas Carey, and his wife Patricia, of Westport; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren survive Mrs Carey. Her husband of 66 years, Harold Carey, predeceased her.

Mrs Carey graduated from Danbury Teachers College, now Western Connecticut University. She was employed as an elementary school teacher and later provided tutoring to elementary school students in Newtown. An accomplished knitter and seamstress, Mrs Carey made hundreds of items for friends, family, and for sale for charitable organizations. In 1977, Mrs Carey made three wedding gowns for two daughters and one daughter-in-law. Mrs Carey often repaired the flag that flies at the Newtown flagpole.

She was a devoted volunteer in the Newtown Congregational Church and earned designation as Volunteer Of The Year for the church in 1976. She was an early advocate and volunteer for hospice.

Along with her husband, she was co-marshal of the Newtown Labor Day parade in 1985. Above all else, Mrs Carey was a loving mother and grandmother, devoted wife, and loyal friend. Her life was characterized by numerous acts of kindness to friends, family, and members of the community.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, July 28, at the Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street, at noon.
