Free Workshop: Contractor,

Consultant, Or Employee?

STAMFORD — Working independently can be a rewarding way to capitalize on skills, build relationships, and generate revenue. But calling one’s self an “independent contractor” conveys a legal status, and those individuals must meet certain requirements to qualify.

On the flip side, hiring an independent contractor can be an effective way to accomplish short-term business goals.

The proper classification of workers — as independent contractors or employees — can be complex because the status depends on such factors as behavioral and financial controls and the relationship of the parties.

The Women’s Business Development Council (WBDC) is hosting the a workshop for anyone who is self-employed, considering self-employment as an independent contractor, or using or considering hiring independent contractors to expand their business. Offered in two groupings, the workshop will provide valuable insight on:

*IRS, DOL, and CTDOL Guidance and Perspectives

*Misclassification Issues for Employers and Workers

*Independent Contractor Agreements

*Tax and Other Implications of Self-Employment

The 6 to 7 pm session is geared to business owners, while the 7:15 to 8:30 pm session is for independent contractors.

The workshop will be held in Stamford, Tuesday, July 31, at the University of Bridgeport Stamford Campus. There is no charge for the session, but registration is required.
