Science Day August 3

HAMDEN — The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station will hold its annual Plant Science Day open house on Wednesday, August 3, at Lockwood Farm.

Adam Moore, executive director and secretary-forester of the Connecticut Forest and Park Association, will give the Samuel W. Johnson Memorial Lecture, entitled “Connecticut and the Forefront of Forestry,” at 11:30 am.

Other speakers, from the Experiment Station Staff, are William R. Nail on “Wine Grape Culture in Connecticut” at 10:15 am; Claire E. Rutledge on “Biology and Management Strategies for Wood-Boring Insects” at 10:40 am; Jeffrey S. Ward on “Challenges Met in Connecticut Forest Research” at 11:05 am; Francis J. Ferrandino on “Nectria Canker on Black Birch: The Malformed Future of Connecticut’s Forests” at 1:15 pm; James A. LaMondia on “Rotation and Green Manure Crops for Nematode Control” at 1:45 pm; and Timothy M. Abbey on “Ecological Landscaping with Native Ornamental Plants” at 2:15 pm.

In addition, there will be demonstrations by Gregory J. Bugbee on “Lawn Fertilizer and the Environment” at 10 am and 1:30 pm and Brian D. Eitzer on “Chromatography and Spectroscopy: Tools of the Analytical Chemist” at 11 am and 2 pm.

There also will be barn displays on a range of topics and about 70 other field plots and exhibits available for viewing throughout the day.

The event runs from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission and parking are free.

An additional feature of Plant Science Day is the presentation of the Century Farm Award to a Connecticut farming family in operation for more than 100 years. The recipient is selected by the Connecticut Agricultural and Natural Resources Association.

Lockwood Farm is in the Mt Carmel section of Hamden.
