State police report that on the morning of July 22, they charged Garner Correctional Institution inmate Paris Palmer, 35, on an outstanding arrest warrant listing the offenses of criminal attempt to commit second-degree assault and possession of a weapon in a correctional institution.

The charges stem from a past incident.

Palmer was slated to appear in Danbury Superior Court on July 22 to answer the charges.

Palmer is serving a 40-year sentence on a murder conviction, according to the state Department of Correction.

In another matter, at about 7 pm on July 19, a Garner correction officer was escorting an unidentified inmate to the prison showers, when the inmate became noncompliant to verbal commands, state police said.

The correction officer then attempted to physically control the inmate, but was injured in the process of trying to do so, state police said.

State police are investigating the incident.

The high-security Garner, which is located at 50 Nunnawauk Road, holds about 630 male inmates.
