Sugar And Spice And

A Little Bit Of Ice

By Susan Coney

Reed Intermediate School hosted the site for the ever-popular SMART (summer music and art) Program. The comprehensive summer enrichment program offered to students by Newtown Continuing Education gives children the opportunity to participate in activities of interest to them.

Elizabeth Helmig had great fun making homemade ice cream as part of the Ooey Goey Chemistry Science Wizard class. Students went outside to concoct this favorite summer treat. Intern Tricia Reed divulged the not-so-secret ingredients that make for a fast, easy, and cool summer sweet.

In a small zip-top baggie mix together a half cup of half and half (or cream may be used for an even richer version) with one tablespoon of sugar and a quarter teaspoon of vanilla. Close the baggie making sure to get all excess air out of the bag. Place the small ice cream baggie inside of a larger baggie that is half full of ice cubes and add one third cup of salt. Zip up the bag and start to shake; in no time at all the mixture magically changes into an out-of-this-world, creamy concoction. Tricia noted that it is important to rinse the small baggie off to remove the salt residue.

Other popular activities offered through the SMART Program were jewelry making, paper mache construction, keyboarding, pottery, and drama to name just a few.
