Volunteer Positions Still Open For Tercentennial Celebration

By Nancy K. Crevier

Despite a good turnout of nearly 30 enthusiastic townspeople at the general meeting for volunteers of the August 6 Tercentennial Celebration at Fairfield Hills, committee co-chairpersons Janet Woycik and Barbara Kasbarian say that still more volunteers are needed to ensure the event runs smoothly.

In particular, people to staff positions at the middle school parking lot and to patrol Queen Street are needed between the hours of 6 pm and 9 pm. Volunteers in those areas will make certain cars are parked properly and legally, and that traffic flows smoothly. They will also act as guides to the viewing areas for fireworks in the evening.

Al Cramer will host an information booth near the security building on Trades Lane. Additional volunteers are needed for this site, as well. Guides will provide information regarding the many events taking place at Fairfield Hills and can sign up for two hour time slots slated between 10 am and 7 pm.

The August 6 celebration is an excellent opportunity for youth to collect community service hours. Assistants for the pony rides, 1 pm to 3 pm, and to gather signatures for the giant Newtown birthday card are being sought. Face painting at the children’s activity tent between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm offers another opportunity for talented young people, as will pitching in to clean up once the festivities end.

For those interested in vintage base ball or vintage cars, the organizers welcome volunteers at these morning events. With three inflatable structures open from 10 am to 5 pm to keep the children busy and happy, many volunteers will be required to prevent long lines and keep track of the dozens of little sneakers strewn about.

If you are not sure what you want to do, but you know you want to help, call Barbara Kasbarian at 270-4340 as soon as possible. There is a niche for every volunteer. Be a part of Newtown’s Historical 300th Birthday Celebration.
