Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Bob Mell will be performing a Connecticut Veterans Salute to Veterans, young and old, on Tuesday, August 5, at 1 pm.

*HAIRCUTS will be offered every Monday by appointment between 12:30 and 2 pm. Cost is $12 for women and $10 for men. Call 270-4310.

*COMMISSION ON AGING will not meet in July or August.

*CRUISING CALMLY ALONG! to Holyoke Heritage State Park, lunch a the elegant Delaney House, and cruise along the Connecticut River on The Lady Bea between the Holyoke Dam and Northampton. Depart at 8 am on Wednesday, August 6; $73 per person.

 

Upcoming Programs

*ORIGAMI CLASS will be Tuesday, August 12, at 1 pm. Learn a new craft.

*WCAAA FRAUD presentation and bingo will be Wednesday, August 13, at 1 pm. Learn how to protect yourself from fraud.

*SENIOR ACTION Committee will meet Thursday, August 21, at 2:30 pm.

*AARP  55 ALIVE Driving Course will be on Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. You must attend both days. A $10 payable day of class.

*ROBERT CLARK will perform Tuesday, August 26, at 1 pm from “Always to Your Cheatin’ Heart.”

*A CRAFT CLASS to make a terra cotta bird feeder will be Thursday, August 28, at 1 pm.

*WHAT’S NEW at the center is a billiards room, poker/card room, ping pong, and Wii bowling, golf, tennis and baseball.

*HARVEST BAZAAR is coming! If you have a special craft or hobby and would like to donate it to sell at the bazaar, call 270-4310.

 

Day Trips

*LOBSTER FEST at The Log Cabin overlooking the valley in Holyoke, Mass., will include lunch, entertainment by the Riverboat Ramblers, and a visit to the Christmas Tree Shop. Depart Wednesday, August 20, at 8 am; cost is $80.

*24th Annual STATEWIDE SENIOR OUTING at Holiday Hill in Cheshire, on Monday, August 25, from 9 am to 4 pm; bus will depart at 8:30 am; $25 per ticket. All day food and ice cream, entertainment, three pools, bocce, hayrides, and horseshoes.

*See the Mel Brooks musical, The Producers, at WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE on Wednesday, September 3. Depart at 9 am; $76 per person.

*Take a bus trip to THE BIG E FAIR on Wednesday, September 17, Connecticut Day, at 8:30 am. Cost is $50.

 

Recurring Activities

*FREE COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Wii BOWLING , Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week Of August 4–8

Monday: Tomato soup, cold cut grinder with ham, turkey, and cheese, mustard, lettuce, tomato, three-bean salad, pineapple tidbits.

Tuesday: Swiss steak, noodles with gravy, diced carrots, wheat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping

Wednesday: Fish with Florentine sauce, brown rice pilaf, Italian blend vegetables, seedless rye bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Thursday:  Yankee pot roast with gravy, baked potato, peas and pearl onions, dinner roll, chocolate chip cookie.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, August 11:  Barbecue chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, cut green beans, buttermilk biscuit, pistachio pudding with whipped topping.

Tuesday, August 12: Stuffed salmon with dill sauce, rice pilaf, California blend vegetables, whole wheat bread, grape juice, seasonal fresh fruit.
