Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Every Tuesday at 2 pm jump in the van for ice cream. Sign up at the front desk.

*On Tuesday, August 7, at 1 pm, Blair Soucy, vice president of the Bristol Coin Club and an ANA life member, will talk about the US Mint, gold and silver bullion market, and coin and currency collecting. Bring in any coins or currency for an idea of value and rarity. Reservations required.

*A Polynesian dance troop, along with a ukulele band that will serenade you, will be at the center on Thursday, August 9, at 1 pm. Space is limited; call for reservations.

*On Friday, August 10, lunch is at Shadows on the Hudson overlooking the Hudson River; then onto the Walkway Over the Hudson, a pedestrian bridge over the river; and lastly, enjoy a two-hour cruise on the Mystere. Departure time is 8:45; cost is $83.

*On Friday, August 10, at 11:30, depart for Eichler’s Cove and bring your picnic lunch.

 

Upcoming Programs

*The Golden Noters are looking for people to join the chorus for a weekly sing-along of the oldies with Ethel Kaufman every Monday at 1 pm.

*A bake sale will be on the third Monday of the month from 9 to 10 am. Bring donations of baked goods in before that time.

*Commission on Aging meets the third Monday of every month at 5 pm.

*Giant Tag Sale and Car Wash fundraiser is on Saturday, August 18, 9 am to 3 pm. Donate unwanted “treasures” no earlier than August 10 or reserve a table to rent for $25.

*Hawaiian luau bingo will be Wednesday, August 22, at 1 pm. Grass skirts and coconuts will be supplied.

*Reminder that the Lifeline Lunch and Learn has been canceled for August 24.

Day Trips

*Depart Tuesday, August 14, at 10 am for a trip on the ferry to Port Jefferson, N.Y. Take our van to the ferry. Wear sneakers. Van will not be on the ferry.

*The Inn at Villa Bianca’s annual luau is Wednesday, August 15, 11:30 am to 2 pm. All you can eat family-style luncheon, entertainment, and dancing for $29.95. The van can accommodate 16 and will depart at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool.

*Annual Summer Picnic at Holiday Hill is Monday, August 20, 9 am to 4 pm. Unlimited buffet, entertainment by Vinnie Carr with dancing and singing, bingo all day, bocce, horseshoes, mini golf, heated pool, and more. Cost is $28 and must be paid by August 6. Depart at 8 am. The center will be closed.

*Westchester Broadway Theatre luncheon trip to see Can-Can on Wednesday, September 5, for $90.

*Travel to the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York and visit the world’s largest kaleidoscope, shop at unique country stores, lunch at the Sportman’s Alamo Cantina, and visit the Stucki Embroidery Works on Thursday, September 20. Cost is $ 86; departure time is 8:30 am.

Overnight Trips

*Upcoming Trips: A Nova Scotia cruise on the Carnival Glory September 3–8, and tour Italy: Sorrento, Naples/Pomell, the Isle of Capri, and more on October 11–19; King Neptune’s USO Show in Virginia Beach on October 14–18; and Bermuda with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines on the Explorer of the Seas on October 28–November 4. Monday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm, chorus/sing-along; 1:30 pm, art class. 2 pm yoga.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards For Troops; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30, line dancing; noon, lunch; 2 pm, tai chi; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Wednesday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 2:15 pm, Bridges.

Thursday: 10:30 am Iris fold cards; noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble; 1 pm, yoga; 1:30 Wii bowling.

Friday: 9 am, Zumba Gold and mah jongg; 10:30 am, quilting or sewing; noon, knit or crochet; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table, and various board games.

 

Menu For Week Of

August 6–10

Monday: Oven fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, chopped spinach, wheat bread, cinnamon applesauce.

Tuesday: Hot open roast beef sandwich on wheat with gravy, steak fries, fresh zucchini, apple juice, pie.

Wednesday: Pasta fagioli, chef salad plate with turkey, ham, cheese, tomato, cucumber, dressing, pasta vegetable salad, grinder roll, sherbet.

Thursday: Taste of Italy: Cannelloni cheese pasta with white sauce, cauliflower and zucchini, baked tomato half, Italian bread, chocolate mousse with whipped topping.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, August 14: Ravioli with marinara sauce, meatballs, Italian blend vegetables, Italian bread, fresh fruit.

Tuesday, August 13: Italian wedding soup with crackers, tuna salad plate, carrot and raisin salad, wheat sandwich roll, lemon pudding with whipped topping.
