Blue Team Prevails In All-Newtown Battle

It was quite a two weeks of playoff baseball for the Newtown Blue 9 year old B team, which went on to reach the I-84 championship game with a win over rival Newtown Gold in the semifinals.

The journey began with a walk-off win against a tough Easton team last Saturday. Blue then traveled to Shepaug and was handed their first loss of the double elimination tournament. After rain suspended Tuesday night’s game, Blue had to return to Westport Wednesday night to complete the final two innings and held on to defeat and eliminate the second-ranked Westport team 7-6.

Newtown Blue again faced the tough Easton team at home, Thursday night, and advanced with a 5-2 victory which ended with a triple play in the top of the sixth.

The Newtown Blue team then faced its in-town rivals, Newtown Gold, on Friday night with a trip to the championship on the line. Rain suspended play in the second inning with Gold ahead 2-1.

Play resumed Saturday morning and ended with a dramatic come from behind, 7-6 walk-off win by Newtown Blue in the bottom of the sixth.

Following the game, Blue had to immediately load the cars and head to Roxbury to face the undefeated Shepaug team. Newtown Blue gave Roxbury all it could handle but had to settle as tournament runners up with an 8-6 loss.  Newtown Blue finished second among 19 teams with a 15-6 record.

The team was managed by Bob Lydon with help from assistant coaches Adam Tyrell, Jim Accousti, Will Loging, George Moran, and Steve Meeker.
