Probation Violation

On Church Hill Road, near its intersection with Queen Street, at about 1:27 pm on July 28, police spotted Paul Sarnik, 51, of 5 Bungalow Terrace, for whom they held a warrant, police said.

Police said they charged Sarnik with violation of probation in connection with a past incident.

Sarnik was held on $100 bail for a July 29 court appearance, police said. In court, Sarnik pleaded not guilty to the charge, and was released on a written promise to appear in court on August 19.

Truck Hits Bridge

Catherine Matyszewski, 51, of Southbury was driving a 2015 International box truck westward on Botsford Hill Road, south of its intersection with High Bridge Road, about 4:30 pm on July 28, when the top of the 12-foot, 7-inch tall truck struck the Housatonic Railroad's rail overpass, which has a 11-foot, 5-inch clearance, police said.

The area is posted with signs noting the low-clearance overpass, police said. The truck was towed away due it being damaged in the crash.

There were no injuries. Police issued Matyszewski an infraction for driving a vehicle that exceeded the bridge's clearance.

Dodgingtown Collision

At about 4 pm on July 27, motorist Julie Drake, 40, of Bethel, who was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima westward on Dodgingtown Road, near its intersection with Flat Swamp Road, stopped due to traffic conditions, after which the Nissan was struck from behind by motorist Linda Cirella, 67, of Bethel, who was driving a 2006 Saab 9-3, police report.

There were no injuries. Police report they issued Cirella an infraction for following too closely.

Vehicular Violations

While on patrol about 5:47 pm on July 27, police said they observed Eugene F. Casivant, Jr, 38, of Southbury riding a motor scooter westward on Berkshire Road and then onto Washington Avenue.

The scooter maneuvered on the road, moving in and out of traffic and passing several vehicles, after which police stopped it to investigate.

Police said they charged Casivant with illegal passing on the right and with driving with a suspended license. Police released Casivant on $500 nonsurety bail for an August 10 court appearance.

DUI Incident

Police report they responded to a motor vehicle accident at Nunnawauk Road about 5:15 pm on July 28, in which the driver of the offending vehicle fled the scene of the incident.

Police said they located the driver in question at his residence at the Nunnawauk Meadows housing complex and then charged Cezary Sokol, 55, with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, making a restricted turn, and interfering with police.

Police said they held Sokol on $1,500 bail for a July 29 court appearance. In court, Sokol pleaded not guilty to all charges and was released on a written promise to appear in court on August 19.

Intersection Collision

A collision occurred on Riverside Road at its four-way intersection with Glen Road, Church Hill Road, and Washington Avenue about 8:45 am on July 29.

In that incident, motorist Chana Fanning, 18, of 1 Alpine Circle, who was driving a 2016 Kia Forte, struck the rear end of a 2014 Subaru Forester driven by Kathleen Vanhavere, 64, of 45 Riverside Road, police said.

There were no injuries. Fanning received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

Sandy Hook DUI

Police report that at about 9:30 pm on July 29, they spotted a motorist driving erratically southward on Washington Avenue, near Pearl Street, after which they stopped the auto on Berkshire Road near Lone Oak Meadows Road to investigate.

Police said they charged motorist Laura Thompson, 54, of 57 Pole Bridge Road with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, and failure to keep to the right on a curve.

Thompson was released on $500 bail for an August 11 court appearance, police said.

Riverside Road Collision

Police said motorist Dean Delisle, 21, of New Fairfield was driving a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck on Riverside Road, near its intersection with Philo Curtis Road, about 10:52 pm on July 30, when a noncontact vehicle, which was approaching the Dodge from the opposite direction, rounded a curve in the road and was traveling in the path of the Dodge.

Delisle swerved to the right to avoid colliding with the vehicle, but struck a curbside residential mailbox, police said. There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Interstate Crash

At about 10:50 pm on July 31 during rainy conditions, motorist Diane Petraglia, 66, of Stratford was driving a 2016 Honda CR-V SUV eastward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, when while attempting to merge his vehicle, motorist Elsworth Greenwood, 97, of Ocala, Fla., sideswiped the Honda, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police issued Greenwood an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Saturn Vs Guardrail

Motorist Juan Gonzalez-Culajay, 30, of Southbury was driving a 2005 Saturn Relay minivan northward on Toddy Hill Road, near its intersection with Turkey Roost Road, when he drove off the right road shoulder and struck some guardrailing at about 12:51 am on August 1, police said.

Gonzalez-Culajay reported that a southbound vehicle with its high beams on appeared to cross the road's centerline, causing him to keep to the right, resulting in the minivan hitting the guardrailing, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Gonzalez-Culajay for making a restricted turn.

Missing Motorist

A one-vehicle accident occurred on Berkshire Road, about 1,500 feet east of its intersection with Jordan Hill Road, about 3:26 am on August 1.

Police said that an unknown motorist driving a 2006 Nissan Altima had fled the accident scene before police arrived.

Police said their investigation indicated that the motorist was traveling eastward, after which the auto went into a spin, drove up an embankment along the westbound road shoulder, struck a rock, reentered the road and then traveled eastward.

A search at the scene did not find a driver, police said. Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact investigating Officer William Crone at the police station at 203-426-5841.

BMW vs Ford

Motorist Keith Manca, 43, of 7 Wentworth Drive, who was driving a 2014 Ford F-150 truck westward on Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, slowed due to traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Jeannie Kenkare, 41, of Cheshire, who was driving a 2015 BMW 428-XI auto at about 2:41 pm on August 1, state police said.

Danbury Ambulance staffers assessed Kenkare at the scene for pain, state police said. Kankare received an infraction for following too closely, state police said.

Highway Collision

State police said that at about 3:46 pm on August 1 on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, motorist Michael Serra, 47, of Shelton, who was driving a 2007 BMW 530-XI sedan, slowed due to traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by a 2013 Dodge Ram truck driven by Sidney DeSouza, 33, of Silver Springs, Md.

There were no injuries. State police issued DeSouza an infraction for following too closely.

 

Rogue Off Road

Police report that at about 11:58 pm on August 3, motorist Ike Coutermash, 57, of Easton was driving a 2015 Nissan Rogue SUV westward on Route 302 in Dodgingtown, in the area where that road's name changes from Sugar Street to Dodgingtown Road, when while negotiating a sweeping curve to the right, the vehicle went off the left side of the road and struck a utility pole.

The Nissan also hit two road signs, police said. After the collisions, Coutermash continued traveling northward on Route 302 and entered Bethel, police said. There were no injuries.

After locating Coutermash, police said they verbally warned him for failure to keep to the right on a curve and also issued him a misdemeanor summons for evading responsibility.
