Volunteer Center Opportunities

DANBURY — The Volunteer Center is a leader in strengthening the community by connecting people to volunteer service.

The following are some of the center’s current volunteer opportunities. Call 797-1154 or send email to volunteers@VolunteerDanbury.org for more information on these opportunities or visit VolunteerDanbury.org for even more opportunities and information.

*The School Success Fund is in need of financial donations to help prepare at-risk children in the community for the start of the next school year. Donations will assist with the purchase of school clothing, backpacks, and supplies. Donors will receive a tax donation receipt.

*A piano teacher is needed to volunteer time to provide lessons to interested low-income children who attend a Danbury youth center. There are two functioning baby grand pianos on the premises but no one to teach the children.

*Musicians, dancers, singers, or magicians can practice their talents at elder care facilities in the greater Danbury area. Material must be respectful of and appropriate for an elderly audience.

*Literacy mentors are needed to assist incarcerated mothers or their at-home child who are both participating in a pilot literacy program. Volunteers can either mentor the mother weekly at the federal prison in Danbury or mentor the child by computer using a secure computer software system. All training will be held in Danbury. Participants must be at least 21 to volunteer for this program.

*A consultant is needed to assist a resident council with governance, bylaws, and general parliamentary issues. This council represents families who live in public housing.

*A breakfast program serving the homeless is in need of volunteers willing to commit one day a month to help prepare and serve breakfast Mondays to Fridays from 6:30 to 9 am in Danbury. This is a year-round program currently serving about 130 people each day.

*Share your talents with seniors living at an assisted living facility in Southbury. For anyone with an interest to share in the arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, or current events, The Volunteer Center can offer the perfect environment to volunteer in.*Outdoor activity games are needed for a family picnic that will be held in Danbury on August 21. They can use bocce, volleyball, croquet, soccer balls, bubbles, etc.

*Flat screen monitors would be greatly appreciated at a Danbury nonprofit agency.

*Metal twin-size bed frames with spring tops to eliminate box springs are needed at a Danbury mental health residency program.

*Educational software appropriate for ages 6–17 will be used at an after school and summer program serving lower-income children in Danbury.
