Stray Kats Theatre Company (SKTC) is teaming up with Third Eye Productions, a New York production company that has recently relocated to Newtown, to present Doubt in September. Performances of the John Patrick Shanley will be a featured event of the 2014 Newtown Arts Festival.

Set in 1964, Doubt explores the tensions between a Catholic School Principal and their Parish Priest when she questions his ambiguous relationship with a troubled student. At a time when trust was the order or the day, no one could imagine that trust could be shattered. Doubt explores that moment and the beginning of change.

As Shanley wrote: “Doubt requires more courage than conviction does… because conviction is a resting place and doubt is infinite ... You may come out of my play uncertain. You may want to be sure. Look down on that feeling.”

A Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning play, Doubt was described as “a theatrical experience it would be sinful to miss” by John Simon of New York Magazine.

SKTC’s mission is to present thought-provoking entertainment that sheds light on the human condition and promotes dialogue on issues of importance. Since 2010 SKTC has presented staged readings, original works and contemporary classics in the heart of Newtown.

Its first full production was Small World, an original play by Frederick Stroppel. That production was tapped this summer to play the White Heron Theatre in Nantucket.

Third Eye Productions believes that now, more then ever, it is hard to see things simply in black and white. TEP’s mission, because of complex situations faced in the lives of many, is to begin a conversation, challenging one to think and question by exploring the possibilities and connections we all share.

TEP’s wide range of projects have included theater, film and cabarets, and their unique venue choices — from restaurants in Hollywood, California, to cow pastures in Milford, Pennsylvania — have kept audiences wondering where they will popup next.

Doubt will be presented at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

The cast will include Kate Katcher and Patrick Kearney appearing courtesy of Actor’s Equity Association. Connecticut actresses Molly Garbe (AEA candidate) and Denise Johnson, both from Norwalk, will round out the cast.

Performances will be Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, September 11-20. All shows at 7:30 pm.
