Newtown Gladiators Capture I-84 Summer Travel League Title
The Newtown Gladiators won the I-84 Summer Travel Leagueâs nine-year-old championship this past Saturday by defeating the New Milford Lightning 11-3. Newtown ended the season with a 13-5-2 record.
After losing to the New Milford Lightning in the previous two meetings, the Gladiators were able to break through and overcome an early 3-2 first-inning deficit in a rain-shortened game. Dylan Tyrrell and Spencer Johnson combined to pitch four innings and allowed only three hits and one walk while compiling six strikeouts. Second baseman Daniel Pearson made two puts-outs, Tyrrell caught a comebacker on the mound and Robert Katrinak ended the game by throwing out a runner at first base from his right field position on a would-be single. Mitchell Savoca and Tyrrell had singles and Jack Riley, Matt Campbell and Noah Laferrierre each worked two walks.
