Distracted Driving, Restricted Turn

Newtown police report Kaitlyn R. Mawicke, 30, of Newtown, was operating a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound on Butterfield Road around 2:19 pm, Saturday, July 19.

After passing Georges Hill Road, the SUV went off the southbound shoulder of Butterfield, then struck and broke a utility pole.

Hawleyville Fire Company and an ambulance crew from Stony Hill Fire also responded to the crash, which closed Butterfield from just south of the crash to that road’s intersection with Georges Hill. An Eversource crew also responded, to replace the broken utility pole.

Mawicke and a minor female passenger in the Grand Cherokee were both checked for injuries but did not require transport to a hospital.

The Jeep was towed due to disabling damage. Mawicke was issued an infraction ticket for distracted driving and making a restricted turn.

Following Too Closely

Newtown police report a 2020 Nissan Infiniti SUV being operated by Michael J. Ferrara, 36, of Newtown, was stopped at a red light on South Main Street in the southbound travel lane near the intersection with Meadow Brook Road, around 8:53 pm, Saturday, July 24.

A 2017 Nissan Altima 2.5 sedan being operated by Samantha L. Hall, 18, of Monroe, was traveling south on South Main Street and was unable to stop behind the Infiniti. As a result, the sedan’s front bumper struck the SUV’s rear bumper. No injuries were reported.

Hall was issued an infraction for following too closely, resulting in accident.

Also Following Too Closely

Newtown police report another two-vehicle crash that occurred within minutes of the accident above.

According to their report, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e compact SUV being operated by Keeley Kortze, 20, of Newtown, was traveling south on South Main Street around 8:58 pm, July 24. Kortze stopped in traffic for the previously mentioned accident.

Julianne S. Spillane, 21, of Trumbull, operating a 2011 Chrysler Town & Country Touring minivan, was traveling south on South Main Street behind the Mercedes-Benz.

Spillane was unable to stop the minivan. As a result, the Chrysler’s front bumper struck the rear bumper of the Mercedes. No injuries were reported.

Spillane was issued a written warning for following too closely, resulting in accident.

Assistance Sought Following Crash

Newtown police are seeking the public’s assistance after a serious collision on South Main Street near Mile Hill around noon on Tuesday, July 27.

According to the report, a 2021 BMW 330xi sedan being operated by Mark Khalil, 20, of New Milford, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at the intersection of Mile Hill Road.

A 2012 Honda CR-V compact SUV being operated by Marlene Trauner, 75, of Trumbull, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at the same intersection.

The BMW attempted to turn left onto Mile Hill Road from South Main Street. The front end of the Honda struck the front end of the BMW.

Newtown Hook & Ladder and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the crash. Trauner was transported to the hospital for possible injuries, according to the police report.

Both vehicles were towed due to damage.

This incident is under investigation.

Currituck-Kenan Crash

Newtown police report a 2014 Ram ProMaster cargo van being operated by Brayden J. Hallas, 19, of Brookfield, was traveling southbound on Currituck Road near its intersection with Kenan Road around 7:23 am, Wednesday, July 28.

The van was directly behind a 2018 Subaru Forester compact SUV being operated by Shannon D. Converse, 44, of Brookfield.

An unnamed witness was traveling northbound on Currituck Road.

The Subaru stopped for a non-contact van making a left turn from Currituck onto Kenan. Hallas told police he saw the Subaru had stopped behind the turning traffic, but he was unable to stop in time, so the van struck the SUV from behind.

Hallas additionally attempted to steer the ProMaster to the left, into the roadway, to avoid the Subaru. As a result, the witness was forced to drive onto the grassy shoulder to avoid being struck by the van. There was no contact with the witness’s vehicle.

Hallas had visible scratches on his arms but declined medical attention.

Converse was transported to the hospital by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps with reported head and neck pain.

Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the crash, which closed the road to through-traffic for a short time.

Hallas was given an infraction for following too closely.

Verbal Warning

Newtown police report that a 2015 Toyota Corolla operated by Heather D. Palmer, 26, of Brookfield, was stopped in the left turn only lane on southbound South Main Street at the Mile Hill Road intersection around 9:30 am, Wednesday, July 28. She was waiting to make the left turn onto Mile Hill Road, she told police.

A 2009 Honda Odyssey EXL minivan being operated by Susan Joy, 70, of Newtown, was stopped behind the Toyota.

The minivan rolled forward and struck the rear of the Toyota.

No injuries were reported.

Joy was issued a verbal warning for following too closely.

Three-Vehicle Chain Reaction

Newtown police report a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse LT SUV being operated by Mark D. Farrington, 56, of Newtown, which had been traveling northbound on South Main Street, was stopped, waiting to turn left onto Appleblossom Lane, around 10:38 am, Wednesday, July 28.

While stopped, that vehicle was struck from the rear by a 2018 Hino 268A box truck being operated by Kevin A. Belmont, 43, of Hamden.

The box truck had stopped for traffic behind the Chevrolet, and had been hit from behind by a 2020 Peterbilt 567 heavy-duty truck being operated by Gregory W. Delvecchio, 25, of Trumbull.

The Peterbilt hit the box truck, causing the that truck to move forward and rear-end the stopped Traverse.

No injuries were reported.

Delvecchio was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Outstanding Warrant Arrest

Newtown police on August 2 arrested Danny Booth, 67, of Sandy Hook, on an outstanding warrant for arrest stemming from an investigation into an assault that occurred on April 15, 2021.

After processing, Booth was charged with one count of assault-third degree.

He was released on a written promise to appear at Danbury Superior Court the following day.

Michael Donaty looks at the damage to the 2017 Honda Accord L he was driving around 11:45 am Monday, July 26, as a Newtown police officer surveys the area of Hanover Road and Schoolhouse Hill Road. According to Newtown police, a 2013 Honda Pilot LX, also pictured, being operated by Nestor Rios, 63, of New Milford, was traveling south on Hanover. Rios failed to stop for the posted stop sign at the intersection of Hanover and Schoolhouse, and hit the Accord being operated by Donaty. No injuries were reported. Hook & Ladder firefighters also responded to the crash. Both vehicles were towed due to their damage. Rios was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign. —Bee Photo, Hicks
