`Highlights' Publishes Local Fifth Grader's Story

(with photo)

BY ANN MARIE COHEN

Highlights for Children has published a story in the February issue written by

a local student. Wendy Borst, the ten-year-old author from Sandy Hook, is

excited and encouraged that her short story titled "Game from a Lunch Box!"

will be featured in next month's issue.

It was her fifth grade teacher, Mrs Pachniuk, who recognized Wendy's writing

ability and submitted her story to the Highlights publication offices.

She is currently a sixth-grade student at Newtown Middle School.

Wendy, the daughter of James and Laurie Borst, participates in Pop Warner

Cheerleading and Newtown Middle School Cheerleading. She enjoys reading,

drawing, and of course, writing!

Her love of cats has inspired her plans to become a veterinarian when she

grows up. Wendy has two cats, Chester and Tennessee.

How does it feel to be published at such an early age? Not so extraordinary.

"I'm not so special," she modestly announced.

"Game from a Lunch Box!" is both cleverly written and amusing:

Game from a Lunch Box!

The lunch box opens. The olive hurls the gumball up. The celery tips it over

the carrot. The carrot recovers the ball. He shoots! Swish!

"It's all net -- the carrot scores!" calls the olive. The celery stick gets

the rebound, shoots. Spoing! The ball hits the net and... misses. Beep, beep,

beep, beep. It's halftime.

The olive throws the ball up again. This time the carrot tips it. The celery

turns around, gets the ball. The carrot steals it and shoots. Bong, bong.

Swish! He scores! The celery drives up to the net, the carrot far behind him,

shoots, scores! He gets his rebound. He puts the ball up for a slam dunk!

Beep, beep, beep, beep.The game's over! It's a tie!
