Middle School Highlights Traffic Safety Concerns

BY ANN MARIE COHEN
The Middle School has issued a safety alert to all parents using pick-up and
drop-off points at the school. This alert serves as a preventative measure and
has been prompted by several near accidents.
The safety alert states that drivers use only the horseshoe area in front of
the Middle School for dropping children off between the hours of 8:45 and 9:15
am. The pick-up location is designated to be used between 3:15 and 3:45 pm.
Its location is near the office of the superintendent. Children who are being
picked up will leave through the back door of the cafeteria.
Mary Kelly, transportation director, reviewed this existing safety route along
with Les Weintraub, principal and assistant principals Frank Arnone and
Virginia King.
"It is our intent, stated Mr Frank Arnone, to reinforce this plan and to make
parents more aware. We have the full support of the Newtown police."
Dana Schubert, Newtown officer said, "Buses, children and cars just don't mix.
We sometimes are creatures of habit and want to drive up closer to the
building. Following the safety route is working well, cars are driving in and
out safely."
