Glorydays for December 1, 1995
This week in 1990
Local golfers Bob Snyder and John Andrews shot holes-in-one at Newtown Country
Club and Rock Ridge Country Club, using the same golf ball. Snyder aced the
par-3 eighth hole at NCC on Sunday and left the golf ball in his bag after
finishing his round. The next day, playing with Andrews at RRCC, Snyder lent
his buddy the ball for good luck on the par-3 fifth. Andrews followed with the
first ace of his young career as the magic yellow Pinnacle Gold 4 found the
cup in one, again.
This week in 1985
The Newtown High football team finished its season with a 24-0 rout of
Brookfield, ending the season at 5-4-1. Scott Trapp, Mike Johnson, and Rob
Leno all ran for touchdowns while Trapp kicked a field goal and three PATs.
Johnson rushed for 101 yards on ten carries in the game, Trapp ran for 74
yards on 12 carries, and John Pallas ran for 72 yards on 16 carries.
This week in 1980
After having lost to Immaculate 20-0 during the regular season, the heavy
underdog NHS football team returned the favor with a 21-0 whipping of IHS in
the WCC Championship game. Fifteen-year-old sophomore quarterback Lyle Wells
stepped in for injured starter Steve Teichert and guided the Indians to
victory. Newtown took a 7-0 first half lead on a four-yard Butch Mark TD run.
In the third quarter the Indians scored twice in a minute on a 17-yard TD pass
from Wells to Mark and a 29-yard interception return for a score by junior
linebacker Pete Weaver.
This week in 1975
The Newtown High girls' swim team finished its 10-4 season by placing third in
the Class M Sectionals. Fifteen members of coach Deanne LeBeau's squad
qualified to swim in the meet including Carol Cassidy, Wendy Wilson, Kelly
Sullivan, Ruth Cassidy, Lorraine Ross, Karen Sullivan, Martha Draper, Nancy
Smith, Melissa Guck, Pam Dickerson, Linda Polcyn, Kim Bocchino, Diane Novello,
Carrie Kerstein, and Kim Gay.
This week in 1970
Newtown High School senior quarterback Jason Stevens, and junior wideout,
Courtenay Hough, became the first athletes in NHS history to be named
All-State. Only eleven players in the entire state received such honors.
Stevens passed for 1,640 yards in only eight games, while Hough caught 35
passes for 831 yards and a league-leading 14 touchdowns.
This week in 1965
Lois Bally of the Newtown Junior Bowlers topped Bill Wildman's top score of
118 as she rolled a 119 to go with her string of 118 and 116 at the Newtown
Alleys. Other top scorers that week included Bill Reilly (104), Fred DeClement
(99), Sharon Bailey (99), Bill Parker (94), Gary Grubisa (92), Kathy Hanifin
(91), and Debbie Beardsley (89).
This week in 1960
The NHS boys' varsity basketball team was selected and got a late start
because nearly the entire team had been competing in the state soccer
tournament. This year's team would consist of Jim Tenney, Richard Farrell,
Roger Fazzino, John Norwell, Ron Beardsley, Bruce Herring, Dan Lawlor, Dave
Stickles, Rob Wilkes, and Rich Sperling. Newtown was to open at home against
Bethel on December 2.
This week in 1955
Newtown High boys' varsity basketball coach Harold DeGroat tabbed his five
starters for the team's upcoming season opener with New Milford. Bob Benton
would start at center for the Indians, Dick Maye and Dave Carmody at forwards,
and Bob Ryan and Hugh Brodie in the backcourt. Other NHS players vying for
playing time were Joe Kealey, Ed Thomas, George Kerr, George Geckle, Ralph
Jensen, Jack Qubick, Dick Seman, Cliff Beers, and Cliff Richardson.
