Nutmeg Games 1996
Several local athletes and coaches, other than those on the Intermediate
baseball team, participated in this year's games and following is a rundown of
their fortunes:
Craig Arsenault, competing at the Games for his second time, earned a gold
medal in the 400 meter competition in the 14/18-year-old track and field
division. Arsenault, 16, who will be a junior at St Joe's High School in
September, ran the event in 52.78 to win. He also placed fourth with a 12.16
in the 100 meters. Last summer Arsenault won silver in the 100.
Newtown's Bob Brewster, the commissioner of DAYO (Danbury Athletic Youth
Organization) basketball, skippered the West Region basketball team to a gold
medal in the Scholastic Division. The West, made up primarily of Danbury
players, defeated the North, 94-72 in the gold-medal contest, Sunday behind
Danbury High senior Darnell Barnes' game-high 18 points. Chris Ireland added
15 points and Shawn Osbey, 12.
Trey Hoppmeyer , 14, played a role in helping the West Region's junior soccer
division secure a gold medal as it defeated the East 8-1 in the gold-medal
contest on Sunday. Hoppmeier didn't get to play in the gold-medal game, as he
broke his leg in the team's second-round game while attempting a flip
throw-in.
Newtown's Bill Brookes received a most-interesting gold medal for his 3-under
par efforts on the golf course. Brookes, competing in his fourth Nutmeg Games,
was paired with the only other golfer to sign up in the Senior Division which
played a team-competition format. The two captured the gold by default.
The West Region lacrosse team, in the youth division, advanced all the way to
the gold medal game before falling, 5-3 to the South and having to settle for
silver. Newtown's Shawn Gleason scored a goal for the West in the final while
Newtowners Charles Hill, Spencer D'Agostino, Cameron Law, and Casey Kirch all
contributed throughout the tournament as well.
Newtown's Nicole Allen captured a bronze medal in the Compound Fingers
division of the archery competition.
The West Region baseball team in the Scholastic Division was defeated 5-4 by
the East in the gold-medal contest and left with the silver medal. Playing for
the West was Newtown catcher, Rob Nute and Morris' Jamie Matern, son of
NHS-grad Rick Matern.
One of the West Region's 12-and-under division baseball teams was made up
entirely of Newtown players and coaches. The team, coached by Dennis LaPak and
Fred Glander, constisted of Gregg Burkhart, Tim Frawley, Matthew Glander,
Jason Glander, Jeremy Graves, Ronald Isler, Torrence Lamb, Dennis LaPak, Tim
LaPak, Tom Ramsdell, Ted Rocca, Mark Werbeck, Jon Werbeck, Peter Engel, Nate
Gaines, Matt Pachniuk, and Greg Taylor. The team didn't medal in the
competition which had seven teams in the division.
The West-IV girls' soccer team in the Youth Division settled for a bronze
medal as it lost to the East 1-0 in a shootout in the opening round and then
fell 4-0 to the East on the final day after an 8-0 victory over West-VII.
Newtown's Ruth Wolferseder was a member of the bronze winning team.
Kevin Woessner and Sean and Blaise LaPorta played hockey for the West in the
Youth Division. The nine-year-olds played defense for the team which didn't
medal at the competition.
NHS senior Kristen Denninger played, for the second year, for the West Region
volleyball team in the Scholastic Division. The team placed third in the
competition winning five of its nine games.
