Town Poised For Election Day
The race for first selectman between incumbent Republican Robert Cascella and
Democrat Earl J. Smith Jr will top the ballot in the town election on Tuesday,
November 7. But voters also must decide on candidates for other positions
including Legislative Council, the Board of Education and other members of the
Board of Selectmen.
Voting Hours: 6 am to 8 pm.
Places to Vote: District 1, Newtown Middle School, Queen Street. District 2,
Sandy Hook Firehouse, Riverside Road. District 3-A, Head O'Meadow School,
Boggs Hill Road. District 3-B, Middle Gate School, Cold Spring Road.
Voter Registration: If you are not registered to vote, it's too late unless
you have become a citizen, turned 18 or moved to town after the October 24
registration cutoff date. For those residents, a limited registration session
will be held in the office of the registrars of voters at Edmond Town Hall, 45
Main Street, on Monday, November 6, between 9 and 11 am. Proof of moving,
citizenship or date of birth must be presented.
Voter Identification: Under state law, you must bring identification with you
to the polls. The identification must include your name and at least one of
the following: your addresss, signature or photo.
Absentee Ballots: These are available to persons who are unable to vote on
November 7 due to illness or physical disability, absence from town during
voting hours, religious beliefs which forbid secular activity on election day,
active US military service or service as an election official at a polling
place other than his/her own polling place. Absentee ballots are available at
the town clerk's office in Edmond Town Hall. Office hours are Monday through
Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. Special office hours will be held on Saturday, November
4, from 9 am to noon for the purpose of absentee voting.
Registered Voters: There are 11,504 registered voters in Newtown. They
include: Republicans, 4,440; Democrats, 2,844; A Connecticut Party, 3;
Americans for Perot 1; Concerned Citizens, 2; independents 91; unaffiliated,
4,123.
Elected Offices
First Selectman: Voters will elect either incumbent Republican Robert
Cascella, who is seeking a second term, or Democrat Earl J. Smith Jr.
Selectmen: The candidates are Democrat Gary Fetzer, who is seeking his fourth
term as selectman, and Republican James Mooney Sr. Of the four candidates
running for the Board of Selectmen, the three receiving the most votes will be
elected to the three-member board.
Board of Education: Because of the requirement that the six-member board
consist of an equal number of Repepublicans and Democrats, all three
incumbents who are running will be reelected. They include Republicans Susan
S. Hills and Charles S. Nanavaty, and Democrat Peggy Ulrich-Nims.
Legislative Council: The Legislative Council enacts ordinances and is the
town's finance board. Representatives to the council are elected by district.

Planning & Zoning Commission: Four candidates are running; three will be
elected. The candidates include Republicans Stephen J. Adams , Todd E.
Richardson and John DeFilippe Jr and Democrat David F. Kales.
