NEW COUNCIL ORGANIZES ITSELF

BY STEVE BIGHAM

A new Legislative Council met for the first time Wednesday night and promptly

reelected Republican Pierre Rochman as chairman.

Also reelected was Democrat Melissa Pilchard as vice chairman.

The new council includes Republicans Karen Blawie, Joe Borst, John Kortze, Ed

Lucas, Pierre Rochman, Will Rodgers, Donald Studley and Brian White, and

Democrats Peggy Baiad, Tim Holian, Melissa Pilchard and Lisa Schwartz. The

Democrats now have four seats (rather than the minimum three) for the first

time since the council was reduced in size from 18 members to 12 by a charter

revision passed in 1991.

The council also established its six standing sub-committees, the groups where

most of the council's legwork gets done. They include:

Finance Committee -- Kortze (chairman), Blawie, Studley, and Pilchard.

Ordinance Committee -- Rodgers (chairman), Baiad, Holian, and Lucas.

Administration Committee --Blawie (chairman), Pilchard, White, and Rodgers.

Education Committee -- Borst (chairman), Blawie, White, and Schwartz.

Public Works Committee -- Studley (chairman), Borst, Baiad, Holian.

Public Safety Committee -- Schwartz (chairman), Lucas, Kortze, and White.

The council is expected to begin meeting at the Cyrenius Booth Library once

the addition is completed there. Meetings will continue to start at 8 pm.
