Plea Due From Hunter Charged In Shooting Death
An Oxford hunter who allegedly shot and killed a Bridgeport hunter in Lower
Paugussett State Forest last month will have until December 16 to enter a plea
to two criminal charges lodged against him after a state police investigation
into the incident.
Charges of criminally negligent homicide and first-degree reckless
endangerment are pending against David M. Alechnowicz, 38, of Oxford in
connection with Mr Alechnowicz's allegedly shooting and killing Bridgeport
hunter Scott A. DiBecelle, 28, on November 2 deep in the forest off Great
Quarter Road in Sandy Hook.
Mr Alechnowicz, who was hunting turkey as dusk approached, apparently thought
Mr DiBecelle was a turkey and fired at him with a 12-gauge shotgun, fatally
wounding him in the accidental killing, state police have said. Mr DiBecelle,
who was hunting coyote, was dressed in camouflage and not wearing
high-visibility orange clothing as is required of hunters in the state,
according to state police.
In their investigation, state police determined that Mr Alechnowicz was at
fault for not positively identifying his target as legal game before firing
his weapon at it.
Mr Alechnowicz drank three beers in the hours before the shooting incident,
according to an Associated Press report.
Mr Alechnowicz was arraigned on the two charges Monday in Danbury Superior
Court.
