Riding her trusted pony, Just Plain Pepper, Kendall McChord of Newtown earned

the overall championship in the junior division of the Associated Bridle

Trails Fall Pace Series. The series, which consists of four hunter paces

sponsored by the Bedford, Putnam, Lewisboro, and Greenwich bridle trails

associations, concluded last Sunday at the Greenwich pace.

Kendall, who is nine years old, accumulated 23 points in the series to finish

ahead of reserve champion Gillian Pech. Her pony " Pepper " is pretty old and

is usually the smallest mount by far at any of the paces. (He stands 12.2

hands, or about 50 inches at the shoulder). Nevertheless, aboard Pepper

Kendall completed all four paces, each one a cross-country ride of ten to 12

miles in length. In one of them, the Putnam Horse Council pace, Kendall and

Pepper rode through the pouring rain, cold, and mud.

Kendall and Pepper collected their series trophy and ribbon during an awards

ceremony at the final pace. The Greenwich event was originally scheduled for

October 20 but was postponed due to a rainstorm that weekend.

The wife-and-husband team of Eileen and Doug Ricci were the overall leading

riders with 36 points.

The hunter division champions were Mindy Condon and Dave Dybas with 28 points,

and the reserve champions were Richard Fontanella and George Barnett with 17

points. Pleasure division champions were Kate Arens with 27 points, and

reserve champions were Debbie and Bill Carlson with 14 points.

Ed Fish and Roy Callendar were the Western division winners with 28 points,
