Glorydays - February 9, 1996
This week in 1991
Jeff Christner scored 24 points and Chris Murphy 19 as the Newtown Middle
School boys' basketball team whipped Tomlinson, 71-60 in the opening round of
the Chalk Hill Tournament avenging a 15-point loss when the two teams met
earlier in the year. On the following night, Newtown (coached by Gregg Simon
and Tom Kuroski ) lost 69-58 to the host team and its star Courtney Alexander
who scored 30 points and copped MVP honors. Christner (22 points) and Murphy
(15) were named to the All-Tournament team for Newtown. Alexander is currently
a highly-touted freshman recruit at the University of Virginia.
This week in 1986
Mike Dyer netted a game-high 20 points, but the St Rose School boys'
basketball team was a 53-38 loser to undefeated Immanuel Lutheran of Danbury.
Brad Bednar scored eight points for St Rose, Tim O'Connor scored six, and Mark
Baker and Eric Araya scored two each. In the jayvee contest St Rose was a
19-17 winner as Ryan Lyddy and Jay Gargano combined for 17 points.
This week in 1981
The St Rose CYO boys' basketball team upped its record to 4-1 with a tight
34-33 win over St Gregory's of Danbury. Mark Leitner and Joe LaCava led the
locals, combining for 15 points, while Bob Gibbons and Butch Mark scored four
points apiece. Doug VanRiper, Andy Snow, and Bill Nicholson were cited for
their defensive play in the contest as well.
This week in 1976
Harris' Hookers laid claim to the Newtown Recreation Men's Volleyball League
crown as they held off Shpunt's Spikers to win the deciding game, 15-11.
Harris' won the first game 15-6 behind the net play of Jimmy Stiewing and Lou
DeFilio. They then jumped out to a 12-3 lead in Game Two, but Shpunt's came
back behind Ronnie Skelton and Jim, Jack, and Jerry Shpunt to win, 16-14.
Arnie Miller was the Game Three standout as Harris' pocketed the title. Other
players included Howie Somma, Mitch Reese, Bubs Harris, Steve Woodward, and
Mickey Lucas.
This week in 1971
The Newtown High girls' basketball team got a game-high 13 points from Pam
Skelton as it beat Masuk, 32-22. Patricia Farrell added eight points for the
Lady Indians, Sara Freeman and Barb Mesinger scored four each, and Marilyn
McCarthy scored three. Jerry Tschada scored eleven points in the night's
preliminary contest as the NHS jayvees also won, 24-20.
This week in 1966
The NHS girls' jayvee basketball team pulled off the unlikely as it shutout
the Ridgefield JV girls, 21-0. Sue Dayton and Helene Stickkel provided the
offensive pop in the whitewash. In the varsity tilt that followed, Elie
Pincera and Jeanne Farrell helped Newtown tie the game at the regulation
buzzer only to lose to Ridgefield, 28-26 in overtime.
This week in 1961
Ronnie Beardsley scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a
career-high 31 points as he led the Newtown High boys' basketball team to a
one-sided 81-42 win over Joel Barlow.
This week in 1956
The NHS jayvee girls' basketball team, coached by Ann Anderson, improved its
undefeated record to 7-0 on the season. Team members included Priscilla Black,
Holly Kamas, Judy Tenney, Charlotte Ferris, Ione Sedor, Joan Mann, Cheryl
Smith, Donna Smith, Carol Pekar, Lorraine Bartram, Judy Hull, Rose Lattin, and
Judy Lockwood.
This week in 1951
Marvin Shredders pumped in 28 points as he led the NHS boys' basketball team
to a 50-44 win over Morris. Fred Benton played a fine defensive game and
scored ten points. Bob Kingman, after scoring 18 points in the jayvee contest,
added four in the varsity tilt.
This week in 1941
Elenore Holcomb, Hellen Cullen, Sue and Kay Cole, and Jeanne Smith, and others
who have made basketball history at old Hawley High, were pegged as alumni
starters for the upcoming girls Alumni Game. Bill Leahy, Dwight Burr, Bud
Naramore, Tom Conway, and Dominic Coscio were the scheduled starters for the
boys' alumni team.
