Bids Sought For Town Hall South
Plans for the renovation of Town Hall South have gone out for bid.
In a legal advertisement published in this week's Bee, contractors are invited
to bid on the project. Bids must be submitted by September 11.
The renovations, designed by local architect John Madzula, include a brick
exterior, pitched roof and multi-paned windows that the architect said are
more in keeping with the historic character of Main Street.
The design includes a small addition which would be created by enclosing the
existing parking ramp and the open space below it. Besides providing storage
and office space, the addition will create a more pleasing exterior facade,
the architect said.
Town officials decided last year that building and code renovations were
needed because the leaking roof, deteriorating siding and periodic flooding
had damaged town records and were creating an eyesore on Main Street. A
committee made up of First Selectman Bob Cascella, Public Works Director Fred
Hurley and Legislative Council members Win Ballard and Joe Borst have been
overseeing the planning.
The Legislative Council subsequently allocated $250,000 in the town's capital
reserve account for the project, although it is now expected to cost about
twice that amount. Once the bids are received and the cost of the project has
been determined, it will be presented to the Legislative Council for approval.
