JOE THE BARBER

WITH PHOTO

MARINO "JOE" PELINO

Hometown: Introdacqua in the Abruzzi region of Italy.

Occupation: Old fashioned barber. I've been behind this chair [at the Queen

Street Shopping Center barber shop] for 34 years as of April 10. I started out

in Italy with Antonio; my other mentor was John Marino, founder of this shop.

[The business] was a gift to me from John Marino in 1990.

Hobbies: Gardening. Flowers, geraniums, fig trees - you name it. You missed

the famous geranium tree I had here - it was beautiful... I raise oleander, a

tropical plant with flowers shaped just like an azalea. They come in all

different colors... I'm a soccer fan. I used to play soccer in Italy. And when

I was in Italy I played classical music - the trumpet.

Family: Wife, three daughters, two grandchildren. I have a mother, who will be

96 in June, and a brother and a sister in Italy; another brother in Monroe;

and cousins in Canada and France. Once a year we go to Canada.

Favorite flower: The rose - it's the queen of all flowers. All flowers are

beautiful but the rose is top of the line.

Favorite hairstyle for men: We are up to date with styles - we do mushrooms.

But my favorite is the Ivy League and Flat Top styles, and beard trims. I have

the majority of cops from Newtown come here for very short hair cuts, very

short.

What do people in the chair like to talk about: Sports. This barber shop is

The Land Of The Giants Football Team. Soccer, too, of course. But for American

sports, football. All sports, really.

Pets: I used to raise canaries. For fourteen years.

Favorite food: Fettuccini, that's my favorite food. I love all the Italian

foods, but fettuccini is my favorite. For vegetables, I love them all, but my

favorite is Swiss chard.

Favorite wine: Red wine - Lambrusco.

Biggest change in Newtown: Fast food, and lots of new houses, too. And changes

in hairstyles - short-short to long-long to short-short, back and forth.

Organizations: Duke of Abruzzi Club in Bridgeport.

Personal Philosophy: I am just a plain, humble man, that's all.
