SNAPSHOT: Mike Zavatsky
Occupation: I am part owner of the Red Rooster Tobacconist in the Queen Street
Shopping Center along with Todd Suhar, Brendan Carson and Dean Fattibene. I am
also a senior representative for Excel Telecommunications.
Biggest Change in Town: I moved to Newtown in 1984. The population has grown
so much that it's hard to drive through town around 5 pm during the week.
There so much development now, so much more than I even knew existed.
Family: I have two children, 1-year-old Taylor Rose and my newborn son, Mark,
who was born June 24th. Being a parent has definitely changed my life as far
as my free time, but it's great. I've been married to Amy Philipp, also from
Newtown, since September, 1997.
My brother Matt, he's 20, also lives with us. He's a student at Sacred Heart.
My dad, John, works at the Red Rooster, too.
Hobbies: Cigars, sports, spending time in Old Lyme at my mother-in-law's house
on the beach. We go there to relax. I coached Little League baseball here in
town for nine years.
Movies: Goodfellas, Scarface, Field of Dreams, The Godfather. I like Martin
Scorcese movies. Pulp Fiction. I like Quentin Tarantino movies, too.
Favorite Sports Teams: New York Mets, Kansas City Chiefs and New York Knicks.
All-Time Greatest Sports memory: I was at game six of the 1996 World Series
when the Yankees beat the Braves. As far as on TV, Kirk Gibson's homerun in
the 1989 World Series to beat Oakland.
Philosophy: I previously owned an oxygen company and the reason I was in it
was to help people. But I felt I wasn't able to do that because it had turned
into such big business with all the large insurance companies and the state
and federal governments. If you can't help people, then what's the point?
