Immaculate High School junior Patty Murren, of Newtown, lost the first set of
her scholastic tennis career when she dropped the first set of the CIAC State
Open singles championship 5-7 to Megah Dave of Newington. Murren, though,
rallied to take the next two sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 to win her
third-straight State Open title and run her career record to 61-0.
This week in 1986
The 11-year-old travel Hotsocs of the Newtown Soccer Club defeated New Canaan
in an important game as Amy Loud, Shari Garcia, and Amy Beer all tallied goals
on assists by Beth Lawson and Karen Gunderman. Reagan Harris and Karen
O'Connor split the goal-keeping duties while Chantal Simonpietri and Sarah
Strom turned in solid defensive efforts as well.
This week in 1981
Newtown High catcher Ed Shortt set a school record with a 6-for-6 day at the
plate as the Indians defeated Joel Barlow in the Class L state quarterfinals.
Shortt then stroked hits in his first two at bats - running his streak to
eight straight - before finally being retired in the state semifinals against
Waterford. Shortt, Bill Nicholson, and Mark Pottinger combined for seven hits
between them, but the Indians lost the game 10-5. Bob Hickson, Karl Svensson,
and Pete Weaver handled the pitching chores in the Newtown defeat. Waterford
then beat Bristol Eastern 18-3 in the state title game.
This week in 1976
Hoping to provide a feeder system for the NHS girls' track team, seniors Margi
Pitrone and Allison Baldwin organized a new program at the Newtown Middle
School. Members of that team included Grace Whitney, Michelle Cunningham,
Eileen Rollins, Cindy Blood, Wanda Kovacs, Jill Finn, Elaine Hunyadi, Christa
Wright, Laura Hunyadi, Kim Stanton, Ruth Cassidy, Anne Campbell, Michelle
Brehm, Lorraine Ross, Jean Ferry, Judy Scanlon, Patty Teller, Mara
Raubitschek, Jeannie Carlson, Andrea Orlowski, Elizabeth Olszyk, and Jane
LaCava.
This week in 1971
The Newtown High girls track team crowned five state champions as Diane
Lawrence broke two individual state records and assisted in breaking another.
Lawrence copped state titles with record-breaking times in the 100 yards
(11.6) and 220 yards (25.8). She also teamed with Janis Berls, Paulette
Pimpinello, and Nancy Nunes to snap the state record in the 440-yard relay
with a time of 51.6. Berls, individually, placed second in the state while
setting an NHS record of 60.5 in the 440 yards. Marilyn McCarthy placed third
in the discus (101-feet-4-inches), while Lisa Hubbell placed sixth in the mile
(5:49.8).
This week in 1966
Monroe Diner and Plastic Molding both continuted their undefeated ways in the
Newtown Softball League. Monroe Diner beat Solly's Wayside by an 11-8 margin
and then beat Sandy Hook Hotel, 14-0, as Ed Mulford knocked out four hits and
pitched for a shutout. The team then won its third straight with a 9-6 triumph
in " a spirited imbroglio with Hewitt Business Machines. " Gordy Chase was the
star of the game with several running catches to rob Hewitt batters of extra
base hits. Ron Beardsley smashed a grand slammer for Hewitt in the second
inning, but it wasn't enough.
This week in 1961
Doug Jeffrey stroked a pair of doubles and Pete Lynwander added one as well as
the Bombers defeated the Sandy Hook Firemen 9-1 in Newtown Recreation Softball
League play. Les Burroughs and Norm Anderson handled the pitching chores for
the winners.
This week in 1956
Tommy Gann came on in relief of Bobby Wilkes in the first inning of the
Yankees Newtown Little League season opener against the Dodgers and struck out
16 men to earn the 6-4 win. Gann allowed a two-run homer to losing pitcher
Bill Christie, but was unhittable otherwise. Newtown First Selectman Edward J
Coleman threw out the first pitch of the season after league president Richard
Winshop made a speech to the crowd of over 200 spectators.
