This week in 1991
Newtown High senior soccer and basketball standout, Lynn Lattanzio, signed a
National Letter of Intent to play basketball for St. John's University.
Lattanzio received a full four-year athletic scholarship, thus becoming the
first athlete in school history to earn a full ride at a major Division I
school.
This week in 1986
Newtown's state football championship hopes were all but dashed as the Indians
lost 31-0 to Immaculate and its star middle linebacker, Newtown resident Jon
Feneroli. Newtown, who was ranked second in Class MM going into the game,
allowed touchdowns all four quarters including long scoring passes of 49 and
62 yards to IHS quarterback Tom Nichols. Newtown's only offensive success came
from receiver Billy Malcom who reeled in four Matt Medve passes for a total of
58 yards. Newtown coach Pete Kohut's son, Joey, played halfback for the
Mustangs in the game. Other Newtown players at Immaculate included Keith
Bliss, Berny Reidy, and Paul Karvosky.
This week in 1981
The tenth-seeded Newtown High volleyball team upset seventh-seeded Holy Cross
by rallying for three-straight wins after losing the first two games 13-15 and
13-15. Spikers Ruth Ann O'Connell, Dawn Parrott, and Dorie Cofer, and
substitutes Kim DeCarlo and Sarah Roman helped NHS rally to win the final
three games by margins of 15-11, 15-10, and 15-13. The team, coached by Pam
Northrup, then went on to face 15th seeded Platt of Meriden who had upset
second-seeded Bassick in its match.
This week in 1976
In two games, Salty Dogs newcomer, Charlie Ferrara scored six goals to lead
Newtown to its first two victories of the fall season in the " B " Division of
the National Soccer League of Connecticut. Newtown has scored 16 goals in its
last five games after a slow offensive start thanks to the efforts of Ronnie
Skelton, Ched Markovich, Chris Armentano, Fred Johr, and Tony Mowa. Clay Small
handled the goalkeeper's duties for the Salty Dogs, who defeated the Portugese
team from Naugatuck and the Italian team from Bridgeport.
This week in 1971
Three brothers - Mike, Bill, and Tom Cavanaugh - were all members of the
Newtown High School varsity football team this fall. Mike, a senior, plays
defensive tackle and is coming back from an early-season hip injury. Tom, a
sophomore, is the biggest physically of the three, and will see playing time
increase markedly next season. Bill, a junior, was called by NHS coach Pete
Kohut, " the most versatile back and one of the finest receivers in the
league. " Bill ran for 252 yards on 92 carries and caught 26 passes for 345
yards while scoring seven touchdowns this season. Football is the favorite
sport in the Cavanaugh family, while all three boys also play CYO basketball
in the winter and look forward to baseball in the spring.
This week in 1966
The Newtown High football team recorded the first victory in its history
history when Mark Richardson broke free on a 60-yard touchdown run and Vic
Stikkel ran for the two-point conversion to beat Bethel 8-6 in the season
finale. The NHS defense then shut Bethel down in the fourth quarter to
preserve the win.
This week in 1961
The town of Newtown turned out in large numbers for a Monday night pep rally
to inspire the Newtown High boys' soccer team who was to take on Hale Ray of
Moodus in the Class C State Championship on Thursday. A huge bonfire was built
and NHS principal Joe Ozanne, Coach Harold S DeGroat, NHS coach Bob Sveda,
Newtown First Selectman Charles W Terrell, and Superintendant of Schools James
F Hinkley all spoke at the event.
This week in 1956
Newtown High basketball coach, Harold S DeGroat, selected the 12 young men who
will comprise his varsity basketball team this winter. Dick Maye, Clifford
Beers, George Geckle, Howard Harmon, and Carl Pfalzgraf will battle for spots
in the fore-court; Cliff Richardson, Graham Lord, and Bill Whittle are trying
at center; Dick Seman, who played tops last year, leads the back-court group
of Bill Cullen, Bernie Cascio, and Jim Pully. The first game will be against
Woodbury on November 30.
This week in 1951
The Newtown Country Club Ladies Golf Association held its annual fall dinner
at the Newtown Inn with 14 golfers present. Prizes for the year were awarded
as follows: Club championship ( Mrs George Kaltenbach) , runner-up ( Mrs E
Ford Cordial) , Spring handicap ( Mrs W Cranston Brewer) , runner-up (Mrs
Cordial), Club Ringers Tournament ( Mrs Francis B Hubbell) , Most improvement
( Mrs Edmund E Neary) , second ( Mrs August Mackro) . Mrs Neary retired as
chairman of the club and Mrs Cordial will take over for next year.
