Newtown Reaffirms Its Commitment To Magnet School
BY MICHELE HOGAN
Newtown District Board of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to
participate in a regional magnet school, provided the state meets all of its
responsibilities (such as 100 percent construction costs and 100 percent
transportation costs).
No school site has yet been selected, but it is expected to be somewhere in
the Danbury area.
The Newtown district has expressed an interest in ten to thirty places for
Newtown students, once this elementary school, called The Academy of
International Studies, is completed.
The school is expected to provide an enriching curriculum in many subject
areas. It will meet all Connecticut requirements and also have a strong focus
on foreign language and international studies.
Preliminary plans also call for providing an education in the performing arts
and community services, as well as math/science, humanities and technology.
Instructional strategies will include cooperative groups, problem solving,
constructivism, reciprocal teaching, looping and multi-age grouping. The
outline indicates that "through these strategies, the ultimate goal is to have
students take ownership of their learning and become life-long learners."
School's superintendent, John Reed, pointed out that a regional school will
also support the state-wide requirement to find ways to reduce racial and
economic isolation.
