Glorydays for November 17, 1995

This week in 1990

Newtown High sophomore, Maureen McGovern, earned All-New England honors as she

placed 22nd at the New England Cross Country Championships in Manchester, New

Hampshire. McGovern finished the 3.1-mile course with a time of 20:21. Liz

Mueller of Waterford won in 18:34 and Erin St John of Bethel was second in

19:37. This week in 1985

Ken Washburn blasted a shot from 40 yards out in the final minutes of the

second sudden death overtime period, to lift the Newtown High soccer team to a

2-1 victory over Bristol Central in the CIAC Class L state semifinals. Sean

Hanrahan had scored Newtown's first goal on an assist from Steve Sumple at the

55-minute mark, to tie the game at 1-1. In the team's preceding quarterfinal

game victory, goalie Frank Schweitzer was the hero in a 2-1 win over North

Haven.

This week in 1980

The Newtown Soccer Club's Strikers advanced to the D Division State Cup

Quarterfinals after beating Farmington 3-2 in a third-round contest. Eric Huss

scored two goals, including the winning goal for the Strikers, after Strikers'

goalie Steve Sumple had come out of the goal to score and tie the game at 2-2.

Other stars for the Strikers were Chris Gretter, Kris Svensson, Bob Bixby,

Mike Svanda, John LeDoux, Jim Craven, and Tim McMahon. The 12-2-1 team was

coached by Jim Cardin.

This week in 1975

The Newtown High football team captured its fourth Western Connecticut

Conference championship as it rallied from a 12-0 deficit and defeated

Immaculate 37-12 to finish the season undefeated at 9-0. Joe Kennedy, Gary

Pepe, Pete Meier, Chris Wertz, and Pat Coyne all scored touchdowns in the

Newtown win.

This week in 1970

In one of the most-dominated football games in school history, Newtown wrapped

up its first WCC title by beating Bethel, 52-0 to finish the season

undefeated. The Indians offense rang up 743 yards to Bethel's 41 and picked up

a total of 40 first downs to Bethel's four. NHS quarterback Jason Stevens set

school passing records by completing 21 of 27 passes for 358 yards and five

touchdowns. Courtenay Hough scored four TD's, while Mark Fesh, Art Conklin,

Bob Berkins, and Kevin Montague all scored once.

This week in 1965

As reported by Newtown High School's Marjorie Kaufman in her column, "

Hi-Notes on Queen Street, " The fall sports season concluded as the NHS

football team lost 12-0 to the jayvee team from Joel Barlow. The student

council is planning an annual victory dance in celebration of the completed

season.

This week in 1960

John Siren, Jack Selner, and Brian Dobbs all scored goals as Paul Nelson's

Newtown High intramural soccer team defeated Jim Fluharty's team, 3-1.

Fluharty scored the lone goal for his team who remained in first place at

4-1-1 despite suffering its first defeat. Dick Carlson, Miles Harris, Mark

Steinfeld, Dwight Sarjeant, Peter Mayberry, and Chester Boles also played well

for the winners.

This week in 1955

December 8 was tabbed as the date for benefit movie showing, by the Little

League of Newtown, which concluded its first season earlier in the year. "

Daddy Long Legs " starring Fred Astaire, would be shown at 7 and 9 pm at the

Edmond Town Hall with a presentation to be made during intermission. The

principal award, made to the league champion, was the James Cashman Memorial

Award which was to be awarded annually and displayed in the Town Hall lobby.

This week in 1950

Newtown's jayvee football team downed Bethel, 26-7 as Don Drotar scored three

touchdowns and Chuck Botsford found pay dirt for another. Andre Maye scored

two points on PAT runs, while Dick Carmody, John Gerger, Ken Carlson, Bob

Brown, and Mac Taggart all played great games as well.
