School Board Predicts Surplus

The Board of Education may have a surplus of more than $90,000 from last

year's budget to the town's general fund.

"Our auditor says it looks like there will be about $93,000 to return to the

general fund," School Board President Herb Rosenthal told the Legislative

Council at the council meeting Wednesday night.

Mr Rosenthal said the school board also had come up with $127,000, as

promised, to put toward the school district's self-funded insurance program

and "by putting a freeze on discretionary spending" had found another $100,000

to put toward the medical insurance plan.

"So we were able to end up putting more than $200,000 toward the plan," Mr

Rosenthal said. "We ended the year with $2.3 million in (medical) claims and

hadn't budgeted anything near that amount.
