Field Trip Policy May Be Modified

The Newtown Board of Education has proposed a modification to its policy

statement regarding field trips. This followed a vote of five-to-one last

month to approve a field trip for eighth grade discovery program students to

Disney World in Florida next spring.

Susan Hills expressed concern that $750 per student was too costly a field

trip for parents of some of the children in the program.

The board proposes to add the following paragraph to the existing policy: "In

order to minimize the cost to students and their families of multi-day field

trips that involve specific classes or groups of students, the teaching staff

should select locations closest to Connecticut that meet the approved

educational objectives of the planned activities."

Field trips would continue to be reviewed by the Board of Education on an

individual basis.

Discussion is scheduled for the board meeting Wednesday November 4, and a vote

Tuesday November 10.
