Class of 1936 Celebrates Sixtieth Reunion
B Y D OROTHY E VANS
Hawley School graduates of the Class of 1936 celebrated their 61st reunion
Tuesday with a luncheon gathering at the Stony Hill Inn. Several members of
the Class of 1935 attended the event as well.
Grace Murphy Rooke greeted class members, Class of 1935 vice-president George
Erb provided a retrospective, and Lilian Canfield McCarthy Ermisch added a
touch of poetry, as she recalled their graduation day.
"The girls wore white dresses and the boys wore blue suits. We marched under
an arch of ferns, carrying Victorian nosegays," Mrs Rooke said.
"Solemn maidens young and sweet, every boy slicked up neat. Today we honor our
classmates - the product of 12 Hawley homerooms. Hail to the survivors,
septuagenarians, all!" Mrs Ermisch said.
The Class of 1936 numbered 26 students and was the largest ever to graduate
from Hawley School. It was the first to hold its graduation ceremonies on the
Edmond Town Hall stage. Hawley School continued to have 12 grades until 1953,
when it became an elementary school and the high school was opened on Queen
Street.
