Bus Drivers Report That Motorists Aren't Stopping
Newtown's bus drivers are becoming more and more frustrated at the increasing
number of motorists who are ignoring bus stop lights.
This year, more than ever, drivers are reportedly passing buses despite the
red flashing lights, which require drivers to stop because children are either
boarding the bus or getting off.
"There's been more complaints this year than ever before," noted bus driver
Charles Rudolph.
Mary Kelly, the school district's transportation director, said drivers need
to realize that those lights mean stop, period.
"What is the biggest complaint that bus drivers have? Cars passing school
buses," she said. "Drivers have to stop. It's against the law if they don't."
The fine for committing the infraction is $450, according to Newtown Police
Lieutenant David Lydem, but the consequences of disregarding the bus lights
could be more severe.
"We've even had cars pass buses on the right with the lights on," noted Mrs
Kelly.
Bus drivers say school yards can be dangerous places if motorists ignore the
flashing lights. Mrs Kelly said parents often drop off students, then pull out
around the parked buses, ignoring the lights.
The problem is recognized statewide. The Connecticut Owners School Bus
Association (COSTA) is organizing a major campaign to remind drivers to stop
for buses, entitled Operation Safe Stop, for this spring.
