Greenways Committee Seeks Emblem Design
The Greenways Committee is looking for someone to design an emblem
representing the trail system that will eventually wind through Newtown,
connecting all open spaces.
The committee is seeking a design that captures the essence of Newtown.
The winning emblem will be attached to trees alongside the trails and roads
that are part of the system. Designs should be submitted as a 7 by 7-inch
circle or square with three, five or six sides. The words "Newtown Trail
System" should be visible on the emblem, but should not be overly prominent.
First prize is an afternoon horseback ride and picnic for two. Horses will be
donated by Bob Wade of Meadowbrook Farms in Newtown.
The Greenways Committee is working to develop a trail system that will one day
connect the Huntingtown State Park with the upper and lower Paugussett State
Forests. The trail system will also be connected to the abandoned rail line
trail system that goes to Long Island Sound.
The emblem will designate that it is legal for a hiker, mountain biker or
horseback rider to use the trail. The trails will be on state, town and Forest
Association, as well as private property on which an easement has been
granted.
Designs should be submitted to: Newtown Greenways Committee, PO Box 648,
Newtown 06470. Each entry should include name, address and phone number. For
more information, call Wes Gillingham at 426-5630 or Cathy Andrews at
426-8000.
The contest ends April 15, 1997, with the winner to be announced by May 15,
1997.
