MIND TYDES returns to Toad's Place in New Haven tonight (March 12), if you
haven't already made plans. The band will be playing at 9 pm. Friday's show is
actually going to be headlined by SHAKEDOWN, and Psychedelic Breakfast also
has an opening set.
TAPROOT, a Newtown band, will be performing at Laszlo's Arts Cafe in Monroe
this weekend. Don't know much about the band, it won't cost you a thing to
catch their show on Saturday night (3/13). There's no cover to check out any
of the shows at the new coffeehouse/arts cafe, which is at 179 Main
Street/Route 25.
Local musicians JIM ALLEN (of Newtown) and DAN BONIS will join
singer-songwriter TERENCE MARTIN for an 8 pm set at Tarrytown Music Hall,
Tarrytown, N.Y., on March 13. The trio will be opening for The David Grisman
Quartet. Tickets are $27; details, call 914/631-3390.
The trio will also perform songs from Martin's CD Division Street at Irving
Plaza in New York City on Tuesday, March 23, as part of a NYC Saves The Music
benefit concert. PHOEBE SNOW headlines the multi-artist event which will
promote music education. The concert is sponsored by VH-1 and Time-Warner. (On
his own, Martin will be performing at Gallagher Mansion in Norwalk on Friday,
March 19. Admission is $3 for that show, and information is available through
Norwalk Parks & Rec.)
The Meadows Music Theatre in Hartford has announced its first show for the
1999 summer season, and by the looks of ticket prices, concertgoers shouldn't
expect to be shelling out bigger bucks this year than they were for last
summer's season.
When N'SYNC returns to the state on July 27 (following its sold-out
performance this weekend at the New Haven Coliseum), the tickets for the show
will have been available for $40 Gold Circle, $35 reserved seating, and $20 up
on the lawn. These tickets will be going on sale Saturday morning, so N'SYNC
fans who missed out on the New Haven show can be first in line for the summer
show (or those already going to New Haven can get ready for their next
go-round).
Showtime is 8 pm and JORDAN KNIGHT and FIVE will both be performing opening
sets. Tickets are through Pro-Tix (860/422-0000). Details should start pouring
in during the next few weeks concerning more shows for the summer in Hartford,
but if you have noticed any of the ads already out for the amphitheatre, the
venue expects to have everyone from STING and JOHN MELLENCAMP to THE LILITH
FAIR, which is apparently going to be in its final variation this year.
This is your final reminder: Parade Day in New Haven is March 14 this year --
that's this Sunday! Toad's Place already started its celebration with a show
by Black 47 in February, and the party continues this weekend. Following the
annual New Haven St Patrick's Day Parade, Toad's Place will open at 2:30 with
lots of corned beef and green beer. THE TIPPERARY KNIGHTS will be on the 300
York Street stage at 3:30, and tickets are just $5 for the afternoon show.
Then on Wednesday -- St Patrick's Day -- THE CLANCY BROTHERS return for
another concert. The band will be performing an early show, scheduled to begin
at 8 pm (which usually means about 9). Tickets are $15.50 in advance, or $17
at the door. And there will still be lots of hot corned beef sandwiches all
around.
(Following their March 14 performance in New Haven, by the way, the Knights
will be in Danbury at Tuxedo Junction on St Patrick's Day on Wednesday, March
17.
The band TRAIN continues to criss-cross the country one year after the release
of its debut album Train . About a month ago, the Bay area quintet hooked up
with BETTER THAN EZRA for a six-week stint as support act, which means when
Better Than Ezra pulls into New Haven for its show at Toad's Place on March
16, you'll also have the opportunity to see these guys.
Tickets for THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES' rescheduled date at Sacred Heart
University in Fairfield are, surprisingly, still available. Tickets are just
$20 each for the March 19 show. Anyone holding tickets from the original date
-- February 26 -- will still be able to get in next Friday, of course.
Showtime is 8 pm; doors open at 7. For more info or to reserve tickets, call
371-7846.
Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.
